"If they're committed to Bowling Green, I'm not going after them." - Babers today in his press conference.
Also, Brian Ward will be going with him to Syracuse.

I know, I don't understand the backpack reference at all?

GO BG!!!
Re: Head coach searching
The backpack thing was a 19 year old misspeaking. He said Ward would "buy" them all backpacks if they played well. I'm sure he meant give.
It is not a big deal. Athletes at every school have multiple backpacks given to them by nike and the athletic department. I'm sure this was going to be the defenses reward for winning the MAC title. Talk about making a mountain out of a mole hill.
The team is off for a week until bowl prep begins. I would imagine the strength coaches will handle the team until the 14th, assuming they aren't heading to Syracuse. Which coincides with the recruiting dead period. It would be nice to have a coach in place, so he could begin looking at his team. These bowl practices are basically spring practice for the young guys.
"Dino Babers says he will not go after players who are committed to Bowling Green. If they decommit, that's another thing."
After seeing everything he said, I think it would be very surprising if anyone on the current staff got the head gig. I would like to see a few coaches stick around to have some continuity.

What was actually said was "Coach Ward said if someone forced two fumbles he would buy us a Nike backpack." Coach Babers smartly chimed in and then Valdes continued on trying to smooth over what he said without success before you hear Babers say "Stop."Falcon137 wrote:The backpack thing was a 19 year old misspeaking. Now, for starters, no one forced two fumbles so essentially it's a moot point. Second, I do think Valdez missspoke and people were laughing about it. And I believe that's where it starts and ends. So there is your "mole hill." However, where the proverbial mole hill turned into a mountain was when it got as much play on SportsCenter that night as our game highlights. It just looked really bad.

It's such a big deal that Kingston named him interim coach, Babers wants him to join his staff and 99% of the BG fan base doesn't even know about it.BGSU33 wrote:What was actually said was "Coach Ward said if someone forced two fumbles he would buy us a Nike backpack." "When asked who he was bringing from Bowling Green, Babers deadpanned, “All the good ones.” Sources have told FootballScoop he will bring his entire offensive staff — co-offensive coordinators Mike Lynch and Sean Lewis, wide receivers coach Kim McCloud, tight ends coach Tom Freeman, outside receivers coach Andrew Sowder — plus defensive coordinator Brian Ward and special teams coordinator/defensive line coach Tom Kaufman.
The two remaining Bowling Green assistants, surely, felt their years of service well-rewarded by their former head coach and his acid-laced comment."
That leaves Monroe and Mickens.

I'm okay with keeping Nick Monroe around who he can keep recruiting Florida for us.Falcon137 wrote:http://footballscoop.com/news/why-did-d ... b-why-not/

As for Babers comment, he's going to favor the guys he's been around since his EIU days and not give much of a thought to the Clawson holdovers.

Hell...I'll help McCloud pack. I'm fine with Monroe and Mickens staying. I like the notion of largely clearing the decks with a coaching change... gives you a chance to get a fresh perspective. Look at Toledo.. Beckmann takes a powder and they promote from within. Campbell holds steady and doesn't improve things, but got a new gig any way. He leaves and they promote from within for continuity. Say what? You prefer to not win?
Feel kind of bad for Knapke...recruited by Clawson and "coached" for a year by Ruggiero. Spends two years with Dino and now he'll get ???.

It's not the fall that hurts...it's when you hit the ground.
Re: Head coach searching
Agreed. Monroe is a helluva recruiter and a fine coach, if he wants to stay, I hope a new coach retains him.Flipper wrote:Hell...I'll help McCloud pack. I'm fine with Monroe and Mickens staying. I would now put Morgan as the odds on favorite to be the starter next year.

Posted this in the recruiting forum but Evan Foster has de-committed and Landers is going on an official visit to Syracuse soon.

Re: Head coach searching
Lets be honest here - Was real happy with Babers while he was here. That said, I always admired Coach Clawson when he left. He did not pursue committed recruits and never parsed words about "if they are committed, then I won't go after them". There are two that have already left - There will be more. I've already heard that 5 have or will be de-committing. I understand that it is a business, but Kingston and the school rallied around the 2014 class and kept them together. I believe that that had a lot to do with Clawson.
