Re: BG with 12 MAC Championships now!
I saw your totals and saw Eastern Michigan had one in 1987! I assumed you had made a mistake, but apparently not!
ROLL ALONG!!!
Re: BG with 12 MAC Championships now!
Every current core MAC team in the conference has won at least one MAC Championship, but not every team has won one since going to the MACC format in 1997 (only 7 of the 12 have won a MACC game).footballguy51 wrote:I saw your totals and saw Eastern Michigan had one in 1987! Re: BG with 12 MAC Championships now!
thanks for posting that 33...Love to see us getting closer to Miami. Miami, BG and tsun have 37 of the 67 titles by current teams, not counting Mooshall and Cincy.

Re: BG with 12 MAC Championships now!
I seem to remember reading somewhere (perhaps in the Detroit News) that Eastern Michigan was at risk of being asked to leave the conference because they had been performing so badly. According to this telling, that talk ended when they won the 1987 MAC title.footballguy51 wrote:I saw your totals and saw Eastern Michigan had one in 1987! Man...it's been a long time since Toledo won...although I think their SID counts "recruiting championships" from Rivals in their total...
It's not the fall that hurts...it's when you hit the ground.
Re: BG with 12 MAC Championships now!
Hard to believe BG went 20+ years between titles. Next year guys like Ronnie Moore will have a chance for, 4 MAC East titles and 3 MAC titles.
Re: BG with 12 MAC Championships now!
I think this really makes you appreciate where the program is at right now. This year would have been somewhat disappointing if we hadn't won the title, yet before 2013 it had been over 20 years since it had happened.
Re: BG with 12 MAC Championships now!
It goes to show how difficult it can be to win a MAC Championship and the importance of being able to do it when in position to. We feel short in the MACC in both 2014 and 2003 but also came up short before the MACC format in 2002 and 2001 under Urban Meyer and also in 1994 (CMU & the fat punter). So after the back-to-back titles in 1991 & 1992, BG had 4 real shots at the title over the next decade in 1994, 2001, 2002 & 2003 but couldn't do it. That's what made 2013 so big for me, we finally broke through, and then this year (2015) we sort of put our stamp on not being a one-and-done team right now. Which leads me to wonder, had we not lost Matt Johnson last year, would be have beaten NIU in 2014? We'll never know but I no doubt think we'd have played a much better game than we did.Falcon137 wrote:Hard to believe BG went 20+ years between titles. In fairness to Craig Fisher, the video clearly shows he was big-boned, not fat:BGSU33 wrote:Falcon137 wrote:and also in 1994 (CMU & the fat punter).

Even so, "you had to time him by a sundial," according to the PASS play-by-play guy (who sounds an awful lot like Michael Reghi).

Yeah, that's Reghi. Why did I let myself click that link?Schadenfreude wrote:In fairness to Craig Fisher, the video clearly shows he was big-boned, not fat:BGSU33 wrote:Falcon137 wrote:and also in 1994 (CMU & the fat punter).

To this day I can see that blob trundling down the field...crushing our hopes with every step . How did we not stop him? I think I had enough time to come out of the stands to tackle him

This play was before my time at BG and have heard it mentioned a thousand times. Never actually seen the play til now. I was expecting a much fatter punter

Re: BG with 12 MAC Championships now!!!
Our chances at victory certainly didn't end in the early Brandon era. I showed up on campus in 2005...BGSU33 wrote:It goes to show how difficult it can be to win a MAC Championship and the importance of being able to do it when in position to. 2005 - BG blitzkriegs MAC early on before Omar Jacobs gets hurt, allowing Akron to beat us minus Omar. BG finishes 5-3, loses 3-way tiebreak with Akron and Miami.
2007 - BG goes 6-2, finishing strongly with 4 straight wins but loses division on tiebreak with Miami thanks to midseason win by Redhawks over BG.
2008 - BG has the most topsy turvy year ever, beating a ranked Pittsburgh but also losing to EMU. Team stays alive in division race till 2nd last week when a horrific choke job against Buffalo hands Da Bulls the division
2009 - BG goes a solid 6-2, winning their final four games a la 2007, but early season loss to Ohio ends up costing Falcons a trip to Detroit.
2012 - BG goes 6-2 again, this time ripping off a 6 game win streak in October and early November. Decisive game vs Kent State in 2nd last week is an instant classic, but unfortunately won by the Flashes to send KSU to Detroit.
Of all these years, 2005 is the one that truly haunts me. The MAC as a whole had a down year that year, and BG had been straight killing teams until Omar went down. An odd side note is that Toledo was clearly the best team in the west that year but didn't make it to Detroit because they (surprise!) lost to NIU at home.

That fake punt cursed us until 2001....I am convinced. How the hell it happened is beyond me.
