“I Just don’t see why we wouldn’t want to be just like the league where all of our players want to play. Whether they do or don’t (play in the NHL), that’s what they’re watching on TV.”

I agree completely. If the college game wants to grow then we need to line up more with the NHL. Anybody else have thoughts on this?

Re: Bergeron would like to see ties broken
I've never had a problem with ties. Not in college football, and not in hockey.
Ties are inherently more likely in hockey, so I don't object to playing a five minute overtime. But giving away a point to any team that forces overtime seems gimmicky. So do shoot outs.
I'm old school on this, I guess.

While I respect the fans, coaches, etc... with the old school views that ties are okay, I don't like them at all as a player, fan, or coach. (Outside of youth hockey).
The Big10 and the NCHC do, the CCHA used to in its final years. They're recorded as NCAA ties but scored as Shootout wins and losses for conference standings. I think the NCAA needs to uniform the process and have shootouts in all NCAA regular season hockey games. College Hockey is experiencing a boom in producing NHL players and having a uniform shootout policy mimicking other pro leagues and the major junior hockey will only benefit the NCAA in continuing to produce NHL players.
Plus NCAA teams are many times on the forefront of growing the game and exposing high level hockey to young players. Kids and casual fans love the shootout. The Big10 has been behind the silly proposal to cut a year of eligibility for 21 freshmen, but if they want to propose anything, it should be shootout. I'm sure those 15-17 yr old kids who they're recruiting would love to see some more sweet shootout goals on social media from College Hockey and could be attractive at getting more of them instead of the CHL route.
NCAA should do a four-on-four OT for 5 mins (could also experiment with 7 min OT) and then a shootout.

I just don't find shootouts exciting. (I'm weird.) If people want them, fine. I don't see the need and wish the NHL would get rid of them instead of everybody else adding them.
I love people who can laugh at themselves. It saves me the effort.

I would like to see 3 on 3 OT at the college level. I do not mind shootouts, and I can see the pros and cons from both sides. But I do agree with Berg that these kids want to play at the NHL level, so why not have the OT/Shootout rules as them?
Bring back the glory!
Re: Bergeron would like to see ties broken
I liked the way the ccha did the shootout. I like the 3 points for a win in regulation or overtime. 2 points to win in shootout and 1 point to lose in shootout. I personally think in the nhl any win in a shootout is a cheap win and should not be rewarded like someone that actually won the game without the gimmick. I don't like the 3 on 3 if you want to win play real hockey. it is not exciting seeing 26 of 30 teams at .500 record or better.
Re: Bergeron would like to see ties broken
If you feel the need to break ties, 5 on 5 sudden death overtime until there's a winner. Every 20 minutes you take a break and make ice. Anything else is a gimmick and favors certain teams over others. The teams got there 5 on 5, so why should it suddenly be 4 on 4 or 3 on 3? And shootouts are just dumb. You can actually see teams play for the shootout instead of going for a win. They take most of the excitement out of overtime.

Re: Bergeron would like to see ties broken
There's nothing wrong with ties. We don't have to have a winner, we're playing for points and seeding. Tournaments decide winners, not gimmicky shootouts or that 3v3 crap that exists solely for fan entertainment.
Re: Bergeron would like to see ties broken
Yeah....they should really have shootouts across the board in college hockey now. It doesn't have to count toward RPI and Pairwise, but it should be used for regular season games and conference standings.
I understand why the WCHA doesn't want it....with the lack of offensive skill in the league, most of these shootouts would take hours to complete.

Re: Bergeron would like to see ties broken
I'm an old school fan as well but the NCAA needs to align itself with the NHL rules on this, simple as that. Not only do some college kids end up going pro, but I think the entertainment value of 3-on-3 for five minutes would surely yield a winner more often than not, and the fans get something to get excited for. If you watch NHL OTs right now, they're simply awesome.
The longer the walk, the farther you crawl.
Re: Bergeron would like to see ties broken
I don't mind ties one bit, but I admit that I find shootouts exciting. I don't buy the keep-up-with-the-NHL thinking on this, though. Shootout or no shootout, the game is the same. If there were a material difference in the games, such as no neutral zone in the NHL
, then matching the NHL would probably be good.
