Re: 24-31
This is how I feel. Either the program takes the next step this year, or we're stuck at being a 7-8 win program, beating up on the dredge of the MAC (and college football for that matter) and going to a bowl game that no one cares about. Wagner isn't going to push the issue because he has access and I respect that, but I think he needs to realize that winning the games you should win sometimes isn't good enough. You need a game or two each year that you pull out that perhaps you shouldn't have won. We've had two of those this year in Miss St. and Toledo where the team should have won but had enough problems to prevent them from doing so. I'm in show me mode right now, because I also don't think this team can roll off four straight wins, two of which are going to be against teams who can score points and have dynamic offenses. Prove me wrong, Dave.BGWriter wrote:The person writing Wagner might have had a stronger letter if they'd also included Clawson's record against UT, in close games, and bowl games. All of that shows a tendency by this staff to lose games that matter or are hard fought. To me, those are far more telling statistics than just the fact that he only seems to beat teams with losing records -- although you'd expect him to knock off a top tier team once in a while. Good coaches do that.
Again, I don't expect this team to win anything this season, because I have no faith, anymore, in this staff to get the team ready for big games and there are two of those (Ohio and Buffalo) left.
Clawson might be able to turn this around if he made a culture change, of sorts. It would involve making some staff changes and bringing in new blood on offense and defense. I know continuity can be a great thing, but it can also create stagnation.
If this team loses out on the MAC East title again, the AD might go to Clawson and tell him to shake things up in an effort to get this team to take another step forward. If players see some coaches losing their jobs because the team under-performed, it sends the message that everyone is accountable.

I have a bad feeling about this week's game. We're coming off two tough losses...it's a road game...it's on an odd day and it's Miami. It has Admiral Akbar written all over it...

I think we'll beat Miami, but I don't think it will be a blowout by any means. I can see us escaping Oxford with a 7 or 10-point win and needing all 4 quarters to put it away. What has me very concerned is the game the following week vs Ohio. Yes, the Miami game is equally as big because if we lose, well, there goes the MAC East. But I still believe that the winner of the BG/OU game is going to win the East.
Tuesday night is going to be a VERY interesting evening for the MAC East. BG is playing Miami, and Ohio will be playing at Buffalo. Will we see a BG come out and show us it is still a real contender and do what it should against a winless team right out of the gate? Or will we see yet another sluggish start and battle with a team we're better than but can't seem to shake them? As mentioned above, we've been dealt a pair of very tough setbacks in the last two games and have also lost a couple of starters in the process. I am very curious to see how they respond. In the other game, you have a red-hot Buffalo team that gets its first true test in the MAC. The Bulls have ran through the MAC against an easy slate to this point. They get to show if they are for real in this one against an Ohio team that has been the team to beat in the East for the better part of the last 5 to 6 years. A win for Ohio and they'll be the team to beat again.
I'm predicting a BG win over Miami and an Ohio win over Buffalo and a huge MAC East showdown vs BG and OU the following week.

I feel pretty good about my takes. No coach will win consistently at Wake, and I think the boosters and school know that. It will be important for him to put together a good year, next year, if he wants to remain the head coach there.daspollak wrote:Give it up, we are in pretty good shape. He has his faults, but he is also not at an elite program grabbing 5 star recruits at will. The loss sucked, but the team still controls it's destiny. I like Johnson as QB, and think the future will only get brighter with him.
Also firing him isn't an option. BG doesn't have the boosters to buy out that contract and pay a new coach.

Clawson did a nice job bringing in some good players.......I still say that being able to recruit off the Sebo Center and having a big increase in the budget assisted him greatly. He wasn't a good in game coach and his teams underachieved until his last year and even 2013 we only beat bad East teams and then played out of our mind against NIU.
I would be shocked if he ever has a winning record in the ACC.....I would bet that he never even gets to 3 wins in conference play.

Eh, I don't fault Clawson for what he did. He went to Williams College which is a highly prestigious school and coached at the FCS level at similar institutions. It's only fitting he took a P5 job at a school which emphasizes the same...he likely wouldn't have been a good fit anywhere else. He'll be given plenty of time there to turn things around before they consider firing him or letting his contract run out.
