IN-GAME Marketing
I went to a Rock Concert and a Hockey game broke out.
For two nights in a row the music was blast out and the pep band played maybe 5 times a night. Twice the announcers didn't even finish who scored a goal and had the assists before the music was blasted out.
Last I knew Van Halen, Aerowsmith, U2, Imagine Dragons, Taylor Swift or whoever else they decide to play has given or attend anything related to BGSU athletics or the hockey program. However, you have 25-40 pep band members attending the game and holding instruments, some of them heavy that all could be potentially falcon club members and future season tickets holders. The lack of use of the pep-band why even have them there, just sell those tickets. Because your not creating an environment where the pep-band is desired and wanted and then become fans down the road. Disconnected, angst and resentment is all you are doing.
Whoever is in-charge is attempting to create an atmosphere that is bigger then what's taking place. It college let the pep-band play, You think this would happen at Michigan, Ohio State, Notre Dame or USC, absolutely not because those bands have been given the power to create an atmosphere and those have become historic. Keep pump that music I'm sure more future ticket sales and falcon club contributions will be coming from the pep band.
I have no ties to the band or the music department either. Been a season ticket holder for years and I don't know anyone that would pick the music over the pep-band.

Football has had same issue the last couple of years. They would even cut over the top of referees announcing a penalty. I agree with what you mentioned, part of going (back) to a college game is the experience and not being drowned out by blasting music you can't even talk over. It really has gone from irritation to total aggravation
Re: IN-GAME Marketing
I noticed it was much worse this weekend. In addition to it being played over the band, it also sounds terrible.
Re: IN-GAME Marketing
I noticed it this weekend as well. Sort of wondered why the band was even there.
Du hockey comme dans le temps!
Re: IN-GAME Marketing
I would MUCH rather hear the pep band than music they play. There seems to be little coordination between the announcer and the idiot running the music. I don't mind a little bit of it but it has become overbearing of late.

A preponderance of bass, perhaps?jbakerifm wrote:I noticed it was much worse this weekend. In addition to it being played over the band, it also sounds terrible.
I remember when Miami was the only school that played recorded music during the hockey games.
I also remember when BG had an organist.
God forbid that there be a moment without something screaming out of the speakers during a break in the action during any athletic event. Do they teach this in sports management, or do you have to hire a consultant to learn crowd manipulation & propaganda?
All is for the best in this best of all possible worlds.
Re: IN-GAME Marketing
That "idiot" is probably a student who's just being told what to do/play. There should be a script of who's doing what at each stoppage. If this isn't happening then that falls on Game Ops/Marketing, and I'm sure if it's truly an issue worth being corrected that the upset fans have notified the AD, right?BGFan wrote:I would MUCH rather hear the pep band than music they play. With that said its college hockey. If we have a pep band there they should be playing and leading the student section. Michigan Tech doesn't even have a music program at their school and they easily have the best pep band in the conference.

Re: IN-GAME Marketing
I realize that, Drew, but how much sense does it take NOT to play the music over the announcer? Or do you truly believe that he's being told to play the music regardless of whether or not the announcer is speaking?BGDrew wrote:That "idiot" is probably a student who's just being told what to do/play. And, yes, issues like this have been mentioned to the AD, not to mention the fact that he frequents these boards as a way of staying in touch with the fan base. If you knew him, you would realize this.

Going to a message board to call someone an idiot, instead of just directly voicing your concern discreetly is what's concerning. The only thing that does is add to the mob mentality of this message board. You would never insult one of the student-athletes that way, so why insult some intern or volunteer student?

Re: IN-GAME Marketing
Mob mentality? Whatever. This board is mild compared to others I've been on. I admit that I was a bit harsh in the heat of the moment so I apologize for that, but I don't apologize for the way I feel about the music as well as stepping on the announcer regardless of who is at fault. At the very least they need a cutoff switch at the scorers table to keep the music off during announcements. As I said, it has been stated to the AD in the past in a discreet manner. There are fans out there that will not go to the games because of it so perhaps bringing it to a public forum is the way to go.BGDrew wrote:If music is being played over the announcement then a script somewhere is not being followed.BGFan wrote:I realize that, Drew, but how much sense does it take NOT to play the music over the announcer? Re: IN-GAME Marketing
I think we can all agree that that Music and in game marketing needs a little bit more coordination and polish.
I would like to hear more of the pep band, as well.
Not to mention that when the music player is plugged into the PA system it about makes it explode from overdrive. It'll be a great way to ruin those new speakers in that place (that are very nice, by the way, from an audio quality standpoint).

Since when does age or being paid dictate whether someone can be criticized for their job performance. That's what you sign up for when you work in the public. If you're a teacher, police officer, firefighter, in political office, sports athlete amateur or professional, you do something for the public you are subject to criticism. Yes, you are an unpaid intern that does something for the public you fall in this category. You don't get a pass because your twenty years old and told to do something by your boss.

Re: IN-GAME Marketing
Kudos to the BGSU Pep Band!
I'll take them over &#!^$ Neil Diamond any day of the week. "Touching Me, Touching You..." Every. Single. Game. <Gag>
Whoever programs the canned music needs to drink some imagination juice--is there some rule that they have to copy the play list of every other arena in the nation?

The Tech band has enthusiasm, I'll give them that. But stripy pants and more drums makes them louder, not necessarily better.BGDrew wrote:BGFan wrote:With that said its college hockey.
