Eliar Hardy started two career games at Notre Dame. Dieter is a superstar player at BG. Hardy became a great player for us, but comparing his impact at Notre Dame to Dieter's impact at BG at their respective points of arrival and (speculative as of now) departure is ridiculous.

I don't fault Dieter one bit if any of this is indeed true. I fault the system that permits it.

So the NCAA should call it the " you suck rule"? If you haven't developed into the player you might have you can go, but if you're good you have to stay....how exactly would that work?

So far as that comment about hating the system goes....that system is called America and it's been fu**ing awesome since 1776 my friend...or should I say "comrade"?

Dieter tweeted he's graduating in May. That's answers that portion of the puzzle.

In theory, our football players are in it to get an education. I don't begrudge anyone choosing to go to a different school for graduate studies. Most people change schools at that point.

Someone mentioned Wake Forest. In fotoball terms, that would make much more sense than Alabama. Quite a few of our players could start at Wake Forest.

Exactly! Personally I would want my graduate degree from somewhere else as do most people.

But what bump does playing at Wake Forest for one year over BG? Sure, it's ACC, obviously. But if they keep middling along, is being the top WR on a P5 team with a losing record more appealing than being the top WR on a two- or three-time MAC champ? I just don't see it.

But, as many have said, Dieter is a smart kid. If someone at Alabama says "Come play for us for a year. You may not start, but we'll get you on the field," does a 400-yard, 3 TD season at Alabama trump a 1,500-yard, 10 TD season at BG? And just throwing darts here, but what if he went through that "draft consultation" process underclassmen can go through and was told he was a 6th rounder, tops, because his numbers were good, but he didn't prove it against adequate competition each week.

The graduate transfer issue seems like a loophole that is a discussion all to itself, but as others have said, we benefited from it with Hardy, so I don't think we can gripe much. Not to mention, two Dieters left other programs to come to BG and their family has been all-in for the Brown and Orange during their time here and will have two degrees to show for it. Roll Along.

Assuming that this entire thread has any kind of basis in reality (and I don't assume that): What if Wake Forest has a better graduate program in whatever it is that Dieter wants to study?

If you're as good of a player in the MAC as Dieter is and are transferring to Alabama for one year, you're making that move based on playing football. Period. I don't care how good Alabama's grad programs are rated, if Dieter leaves BG for Bama, it'll be for the football team. Not sitting in some class.

That's your opinion. While it might be right it doesn't matter. You'll gladly take a transfer from somewhere else but you'll cry foul when it goes the other way.

Tell me why Dieter or anyone else in a similar position should have to begin working on their Master's at the same institution they received their Bachelor Degree? Just because they are an athlete? The rule makes sense.

Yes, it does. There really is no argument.

I agree, assuming you look at it from the academic side, which is perfectly logical and may be the case in this situation (which I think has a stronger base in reality than we may believe, call it a hunch).

But, since this possibly hypothetical situation involves a player that has skills to play at the next level, I still think from an athletic standpoint, moving to Wake Forest from BG is lateral at best. (Since, as you said, we have several players that could start at WF. I agree.) It doesn't matter much if we think our players could start (or even play) at Alabama, it's what Alabama's coaches think of our players.

Which brings up another question. With all the alleged tampering rules in place, how do graduate transfers work? Is it open season on any player who is in position to graduate? Would a player not be a "free agent" until they have graduated? I'm really not clear how that works.

Assuming, with some degree of paranoia, that these posts go back to my loophole comment, let me clarify.

I think it's an excellent option for a player to pursue graduate work at the best university for his/her chosen path. Any other student can do it (and usually does), athletes wanting to use eligibility should be no different.

But the skeptic in me sees yet another chance for the powers that be which are already damaging college athletics to game the system. This Dieter scenario is different, because he's proven to be an outstanding student and players going from BG to the defending national champion may never happen (in this case or again), but what will stop lower-level P5 schools from using the MAC as a farm system, including teams we can beat (and have beaten), furthering the divide. Probably crazy talk, but I never would have thought 20 years ago the CFB landscape would be where it is today, either.

I hear you. The way I look at is --- this is the only time where players have a right that they haven't signed away through a National Letter of Intent. They've completed their studies, that's why they were there, and now are moving on.

If P5 want to use MAC schools as a farm system by getting one-year graduate transfers, the MAC schools haven't been hurt -- their player graduated. It doesn't sound to me like a viable plan for P5 schools.
