I just don't fathom how he is not on a roster in some fashion when the season starts. It's unfathomable. He will be fine. Now start cheering him on.
Re: Lewis at Combine
David Culley, the Cheifs WR coach running the drills, said on air that Lewis' group was the best he's seen at the combine in the last 20 years. Lewis was often the player running through the drills first and was singled out by Culley for this at the conclusion of the session.hammb wrote: this WR class sucks.
Where Lewis excels is not necessarily the fluidity of the routes he runs but rather his uncanny ability to track and come down with the deep ball. That's a valued skill many of the most physically gifted receivers do not possess.

Globe...I like your optimism. If you're right and he sticks....and I want to see him stick...even if it's on a practice squad...for even half a year, Ill donate $20 to a food bank in your name. If he doesn't make it....you owe me nothing. I don't want to root for him to fail

I can absolutely guarantee that. I follow the draft a ton and hes easily on a practice squad and easily drafted. If for anything just off the fact that he was once an OSU recruit at WR.Flipper wrote:Globe...I like your optimism. What Culley said was not that they were the best crop of talent...but that they ran the drills correctly. Two totally different things.mscarn wrote:David Culley, the Cheifs WR coach running the drills, said on air that Lewis' group was the best he's seen at the combine in the last 20 years. The female reporter provided information from the front office and from coaches, anonymously, and the consensus was basically that this was a mediocre class for WR and that no one stood out.
Personally, I think Roger did pretty well. Culley had to admonish him though for making an awesome diving catch. He didn't want them diving for balls without shoulder pads.
I still see him a a 6th or 7th rounder at best. I hope I'm as wrong as I was with Holmes!

I agree. I also think he made a mistake leaving this early (with two years remaining on the table) and I 100% believe he would have gotten better with another year or two under his belt. Even if he returned just one more year. He had two more years at his disposal to completely prep himself for the NFL, make a bigger name for himself and shatter all kind of records along the way. Roger Lewis right now is probably going to be an NFL player in some capacity. But Roger Lewis with two more years of college IS an NFL player in a bigger capacity. If a guy is going to leave school early, he better know it's going to pay off. And if he leaves two years early, he better damn well know it's going to pay off. I hope it does for him, because it would be a shame for him to have left that much eligibility on the table if it backfires. I wish him luck.hammb wrote:That is where we'll never agree, and what the entire conversation boils down to. Sure, if you are working with the premise that he couldn't get better while playing for BG then it makes sense to leave now and get a shot with professional coaching.Globetrotter wrote: There just is no reasonable argument for not leaving early. Even if he ended up in Canada for a few years, he isn't improving in a BG uniform. .
I see absolutely NO reason why he could not get better while playing at BG. If he wanted to. The coaches used him the last 2 years in a way to maximize his effectiveness, but there is absolutely no reason why he couldn't have gone to the coach Jinks and said I wanna learn to run more routes to make me a more effective weapon. I don't for a second believe that the new staff (or the old) would tell him no he's only a 2 route WR. He would have been a lot more valuable in our system by learning to do more, just as he would/will be to the NFL.
If he has the work ethic and drive to get better and improve he could improve at BG. And doing so would position him better for his career. Many, if not most, players only get 1 real shot at the NFL. It behooves the player to take that shot when he's best equipped to stick the first time. For every guy we hear about bouncing around camp to camp to the CFL or whatever before finally making it there are countless others who are cast aside from a couple training camps and are never really given a legit shot.

This shows that the older an NFL rookie WR is, the lower the stats they put up, at least in their rookie season. Then you also take in the fact that it's usually the players 3rd year in the league when rookie WRs blossom. If Lewis were to stay for his final two years, that would put him at 27 when he's supposed to make his jump. I dont think that by staying 2 more years he's going to be raising his draft stock to before the 4th round, that's due to his size and competition. This is a full grown man. He isn't going to be getting 2 inches taller in the next two years. A team is more likely to keep a player around in his 3rd season as a 25 year old than they will as a 27 year old, even if the same "flashes" are shown. That's part of the reason he left early. Another thing is he loses the starting QB. I dont think Knapke is close to as good as Matt Johnson was, and know very little about Morgan or Cunningham, but neither has ever taken a live college game snap. His production next year would likely take a hit, thus making his draft stock take a hit. There's also the fact that another year or two isn't going to make teams forget about what he was accused of in high school, he was going to get those questions regardless.
Finally, it's not like he's going to be running much of a different route tree from last year to this year, because the offenses will likely be similar. I fail to see where all this development in a similar system is going to be taking place. If you ask me, his best chance to show much development would have been to transfer to a higher profile team that plays better competition, and show that he can produce at that level. We would not have wanted that either. I would have loved him playing for us for another year, but the fact is, IMO, that this is his best opportunity to get in to the NFL. Also, this being a weak year for WRs helps Lewis.

This being a weak year for WR's helps guys who graduated last year and stayed in shape

Re: Lewis at Combine
I have seen a few comment on here by people that seem to infer some want Lewis to fail. I haven't sensed that whatsoever. There's certainly a mix of people who think his decision was good/bad to leave early, or that he will/won't pan out in the NFL, but I don't think anyone on here wants him to fail. Somehow that mutually shared thought seems to have been muddled. But one thing is for sure, the rest of the MAC East is happy he's gone and that he won't be playing at BG the next two years.

Re: Lewis at Combine
Braxton Miller who was on Jay Mohr yesterday said there was an issue with the 40yd times at the combine. He had a 4.5, and said that he believes there was an issue with the laser timing system, that's why the group of WR was so slow.

Please...if you aren't good enough to stay sharp by playing a year in Canada, arena football or one of the tons of semi-pro leagues in the country you aren't good enough any way. Guys who were in last year's talent pool will stick before some of the lesser lights of this year. I hope Lewis shows enough at pro day to keep him from being regarded as one of those lesser lights.CBD2032 wrote:Yupp, because a year off live football is always a great path to the NFL.Flipper wrote:This being a weak year for WR's helps guys who graduated last year and stayed in shape

Bullshit...guys a year or two out of college...particularly guys who have been to camps with other teams or dropped from practice squads.. get second looks all the time.

Re: Lewis at Combine
I seen on a few NFL Pro Day schedules that included going to Canada and in other news some from the CFL have signed free agent contracts in the NFL recently. The NFL is definitely turning stones over looking for talent
