Possible replacement candidates include PJ Boatrower....

Someone who has belief without evidence is percolating in Syracuse.
All is for the best in this best of all possible worlds.

Gave his kid the heave ho too. Ryan Cubit was the OC.
The place has been a meat grinder lately. :axe: John Groce will probably be let go next year if they don't significantly improve on the hardwood.

Hired Lovie Smith to replace him.

At least Illinois gets to pay him unless he takes another job.

Interesting choice...has a great reputation in Chicagoland from his run with the Bears, but he hasn't been a coach at the collegiate level since the 90's.

Good example of why you keep your bags packed in major college football these days. In a span of 7 months, they name the guy as their interim coach, then after 11 games they give him a 2 year contract and announce him as the full time coach and 3 1/2 months later a new AD comes on board and gives him the boot. After that experience, he may decide to go apply for work through a temporary employment agency, just to improve his job security.

If his money was guaranteed -- and these contracts usually are -- this seems like a horrendous waste of money.

It's not hard to understand why they thought Lovie Smith might be able to break through the clutter and give potential recruits a second reason to consider Illinois. Even so: To give a guy a two-year extension and fire him three months later? It boggles the mind.

I suppose, in the Big Ten, when it comes to money, it's easy come, easy go. It's difficult to imagine a program in the MAC spending so freely.

It is amazing how much money those Big Ten teams have to play with. [-X

The nonsensical eastward expansion will push B1G network annual payouts to over $40 million per school.....ONE cable company in New York's carriage will net the conference $50 million. That's six times the annual value of the MAC contract with ESPN...and that's just a cable company, not the God of all sports networks.

Make up your mind....you can't piss and moan like the neighborhood weakling when the big kids knock you down and fart on your MAC head when they exclude you from the playoffs and then applaud them for stealing your lunch money.

The expansion makes sense only if you're good with turning college football into a Whitehouse....if you accept part of that process, I don't see how you can object to the end results

(I typed whorehouse and my kindle turned it into Whitehouse...
I was going to correct it before I realized they're synonyms)
