MAJOR upgrades in the future for Steller Field
Re: MAJOR upgrades in the future for Steller Field
There is a small picture in the alumni magazine. Looks nice. I would imagine this would allow BG to host all sorts of events throughout the year.

Anyone have any new info or update on this project? They players were told the turf would be in for this upcoming season.
GO BG!!!
Re: MAJOR upgrades in the future for Steller Field
I was crossing my fingers that the baseball field was finallly going to get its turf this summer while crews were on campus putting in the turf at the football stadium. I thought maybe we'd kill two birds with one stone. But I've heard no news about it so I guess it continues to sit on the shelf.

I don't think you'll see any upgrades for baseball....BG can't afford upgrades to non revenue sports...every ounce of fundraising goes to raise money for FB, Basketball, and Hockey. Hopefully the new AD can improve some things...otherwise just cancel the non revenue sports. Athletics can't fund them...no point in keeping them around.

Well to be NCAA D 1 you need to sponsor 7 men and 7 women sports or 6 men and 8 women minimum. So we can keep those four revenue sports, but we won't be in the NCAA if we cancel everything else.
So maybe we can figure how to add revenue to able to clearly compete in 18 and not just a few.
Cancel four sports would put us at the minimum. But you will still need to continue to manage a tight ship and raise revenue to compete at a high level in all 14. Cutting won't get you there.
I would look to continue to be prudent in spending, raise revenue and work hard in all areas of athletics off field including connection to alumni and academic success. Tough task but doable.
A cursory look at other MAC schools tells me we need to do better across the board. And also tells me that no school "wins" in every sport they sponsor. You cannot do that in MAC at this point. Some do a better job than us and we need to move up. No doubt.

Re: MAJOR upgrades in the future for Steller Field
All I know is we took our most successful men's sport and basically eliminated any chance they had to compete by cutting their scholarships after BACK to BACK MAC CHAMPIONSHIPS 6-7 years ago. Despite that they still won a championship in 2013. Athletics has had plenty of opportunities to fix it and chose not to. So if the new AD can't figure it out and give Baseball a shot to compete, then just cut the program. Why sponsor sports who don't have a chance?
It's easy to say we can do this better or that better and find ways for revenue. MAC schools get their money from student fees...bottom line. BG gets near the bottom in the conference in amount of money from the university and has hockey which is extremely expensive...we're not talking about raising a couple million dollars, BG needs an extra million every year just to operate the department. It's not there sorry to say unless they increase student fees.
Just get rid of what you can and it will all be worth it when BG Hockey finally wins something. Apparently the national championship is right around the corner!

Ok Apollo. Just tell me what four or so sports you want to cut and how to balance the gender matters and then we can see what we can do with baseball.
I love BG baseball. Great success. Love the staff and the players.
Let's put together a plan that allows them to compete with others in the league and continue to win. And let's get creative. And let's continue to manage carefully And let's raise more money for a good cause from folks and entities who believe in BG sports and BG baseball. I believe we can do it. New AD knows baseball.
And he knows we need to compete better across the board in non revenue sports.

I really don't care what sports get cut...either get baseball up to 11.7 scholarships or cut the program.
Re: MAJOR upgrades in the future for Steller Field
Maybe we need a slick fundraising hashtag? Or more Jay Crawford?
Re: MAJOR upgrades in the future for Steller Field
What would Jay Crawford do? Just curious?

He'd talk about how great O$U is while wearing his O$U shirt!

My point exactly. BG embracing him like they have recently is just such a reach. Just all being done for his own best interests.

F##k Jay Crawford and ESPN....
It's not the fall that hurts...it's when you hit the ground.
Re: MAJOR upgrades in the future for Steller Field
Why so much hate for Jay Crawford? Let's embrace him. He's an alum and tweets a lot of positive things about BG. He's also an incredibly friendly guy who went out of his way to chat with me for a couple minutes with I was at the ESPN campus a couple years back. Would I prefer he didn't love OSU so much? Yeah, but it's dumb to exile him.
