Re: New helmets
Wouldn't we run into Title IX issues if we provide all of these extra scholarships?

Well BG owns UT in baseball....so I guess we should just keep BG where they are scholarship wise. But hopefully UT will win a MAC baseball title soon, maybe then our baseball program will get an upgrade.FalconTurf wrote:I wish the athletic department could do a better job of funding all the sports but, if your rival has three shell colors (see a school up 75) then to recruit you will also have three shell colors. It's the nature of the beast. When they start winning MAC titles in baseball BG will look at how they can beat them in baseball.apollo wrote:If it's just decals that's one thing...definitely don't need 3 shells, but at least it isn't a whole new helmet.
Once again...all I'm saying is that our most successful men's sport (Baseball) should get the scholarships back that Christopher cut because he couldn't make budget with Hockey and Football. I'm not saying Baseball should get all this stuff they never had....and yes you would probably have to add scholarships to a women's sport too.
Its one thing to cut money from sports with no track record of success...but to sabatoge one of your most successful programs after they just won 2 conference titles in a row just baffles me. I'm done bringing it up....it just doesn't sit well with me as a BG fan. End rant.

Apollo,
Christopher contributed greatly to the decline in the hockey program as well. He just wasn't a good AD. I would like to see baseball and all sports to be fully funded, but why does it have to be at the expense of our other programs? It seems as you criticize hockey and the other sports because the university supports them. Would you rather be Akron that eliminated baseball? Christopher trying to cut hockey a few years back hurt the program a great deal. We basically had to start over. Chris Bergeron and staff have done a great job and we are in a much better position for success. I want BG to do well in all sports. It is a shame that you root against some of our programs.

By the way, I attended several baseball games this past season.

Apollo,
I don't disagree with you but what I said is reality. Football is going to get first cut of the pie unless they decide basketball is the emphasis for a while. Regardless of AD this is going to be the mode of operation. The TV contract, potential bowl bids and the national exposure playing a Big 5 on a Saturday creates this push. No other program has the potential to get the same attention outside basketball during the NCAA tournament. I know there will be arguments from the hockey program and others but the TV ratings are very clear.
We can also mention the same is the case at the HS level. Schools already have 2 helmets at that level (wouldn't be shocked to be told there is one with 3) and this mentality at the HS level creates a situation where colleges (especially DI colleges) must do more. HS football teams that are only guaranteed 10 games a year have more uni combinations than games. And if Massillon (one over the top example) makes the playoffs, as they did a couple years ago against Perrysburg local to BG, new Nike uniforms arrive via helicopter for the event.

Re: New helmets
When I played HS ball, we had two jerseys and three pants but only one helmet. Then again, that was 15 years ago (has it really been that long???).FalconTurf wrote:Apollo,

Yes...I don't like seeing military service tied to something as trivial as football...I really despised the way the NFL charged the Army for "honoring" the Army....and I knw that there are probably a number of people who don't like seeing intercollegiate athletics used to advertise for the military.Dayons_Den wrote:I generally do not like these kind of helmets as a way of honoring the military or veterans, but the 111 names is a classy touch.
That said..including the 111 names is cool. Is there a more permanent...I don't want to say dignified, but I'm going to say dignified...memorial any where on campus?

Re: New helmets
Memorial Hall has a monument outside of the building and a plaque inside the building listing all those BGSU alums who have died in military service. Quite literally Memorial Hall is so named to honor those Falcons that have given the ultimate sacrifice for our great country.
Interestingly that spot in Memorial Hall has ties back to the origins of this very message board.

Yeah, I was wondering that too. I'm guessing there's a plaque somewhere on campus, but it would be nice to have something a little more to honor those lives. On the other hand, maybe there is a memorial somewhere… And I just never paid attention. I had no idea that BG had 111 names on that list.

From Nontraditional and Military Student Services
As a couple of people have mentioned, there is the plaque in Memorial Hall (that gets updated) with the list of BGSU students and alums who have died in service to their country. There are also the five POW/MIA chairs (Doyt Perry Stadium, Ice Arena, Stroh Center, and two mobile units) in campus venues. The ROTC programs also have a dedicated flag pole outside of Memorial Hall (on the east side). Thank you for the nice picture Dayon.Flipper wrote: Is there a more permanent...I don't want to say dignified, but I'm going to say dignified...memorial any where on campus?
Soon the university will be announcing a memorial garden to be built on the southwest corner of campus. That memorial garden will also include an area dedicated to our student and alumni servicemembers. I will post more about that in the future when the campaign moves from the silent phase.
The construction of our new Veterans Center has been completed and they are moving in the furniture. We will have a dedication and opening ceremony in the fall after classes begin. In addition, the Student Veterans Association is the recipient of a $10,000 grant from Home Depot to furnish the center and the SVA/PAVE offices. Read more at the link below -

Finally, if you like to golf - we will be sponsoring a 9-hole scramble on Saturday, October 8 (2:00 PM shotgun start). The money raised will benefit our Student Veterans Assistance Fund. I believe the price will be $50 per golfer with a portion ($25) being tax deductible and going to the SVA fund. I'll post more about this in early August when everything gets finalized. With sponsorships being available for $100, it would be great if we could gather $100 from those of us on AZZ and sponsor a hole ($200 would sponsor the practice putting green; $500 would sponsor the event).

I assumed there was a plaque or something someplace...I like the idea of a Memorial Garden a lot

Re: New helmets
I could be mistaken, but I'm pretty sure I remember being told that a donor have money to cover the cost of the additional helmets we added to the mix, which meant the department didn't earmark funds for it at all. I actually like that we have several different shells and if someone wants to donate THEIR money to better outfit my team, I'm 100% okay with it.
