Minnesota State applies for NCHC
Re: Minnesota State applies for NCHC
At this point I hope we do move to the NCHC...it'll take about 1/4th a season before it's obvious BG can't compete in that conference. I don't think BG will be invited anywhere unless the whole landscape changes again. BG isn't a factor nationally...finishing in 3rd place in the WCHA isn't a huge accomplishment.

Do you have anything nice about the Hockey program or are you just hoping it will be cut and the Ice Arena turned into an indoor baseball training facility?
The program is improving and will continue to improve. All sports see success in cycles. Hockey is on the way up as are other sports. Because of the number or Hockey programs in relation to the number of Baseball programs in the NCAA Hockey has a smaller hill to climb to the top. That should not diminish the results.
Baseball has seen recent success and is one of the most consistent programs we have here over a long stretch. Do they have the full allotment of scholarships, No. Are they closer than other sports, yes. According to the 2016-2017 Falcon Club Membership Guide Baseball has 10.5 scholarships out of a maximum of 11.7 scholarships. Soccer, Golf, and Cross Country are all farther behind. Cross Country only has one scholarship out of a maximum of five scholarships. Given those constraints, Lou is doing an amazing job!
Should all sports be fully funded, absolutely! But the answer is not cuts, it's more revenue streams outside what has been tapped into already. This is not the time to build one sport by tearing others down. That does no good for the University or department. The number one focus should be on getting all 259 scholarships it will take to get all sports to the NCAA max fully endowed. That gives freedom in the budget for couches salaries, facilities, etc.
Until we clarify our focus the struggles will continue.

Re: Minnesota State applies for NCHC
My comments are based on this illusion BG Hockey is a potential NCHC member. They were not wanted the first time the conference was formed, nor the second time WMU was added, nor this time when the NCHC is going to add two teams with neither being BGSU. Yet some people act like the NCHC is tripping over their heels with excitement to add BG.
Im not sure why you brought all the other sports into this? My comments had nothing to do with any of that. For the record BG Baseball has less scholarships than 10.5, but that isn't what we are talking about. I simply bring up obvious points about hockey's success being due to SOS. Everyone gets so mad about it....maybe hockey will win something this year and I'll shut up.

Interesting take from the Colorado Springs Gazette on Bowling Green's no comment.

Most disturbing to me was "orange-and-black-clad Falcons".

It's like they know that a good first pass on the breakout from a defenseman will almost always result in an odd-man rush against them - but they go in anyway and dare you to make that pass. Well if there is ever a year to win the regular season title this is it. Only playing Tech and Mankato twice is a huge advantage. Still going to have to win the tourney with that schedule unless you win at about a .750 clip and sweep Miami.

A recent public records request did not turn up any written communications between Bowling Green and the NCHC.

I haven't seen this on a level which even deserves a cursory response. Most BG FANS have a foundation footed in reality because we have an understanding of history both distant and recent.apollo wrote:Yet some people act like the NCHC is tripping over their heels with excitement to add BG.
You're the delusional one, I think. Walking around with the swagger of swinging a 12" cock when in reality you're running around humping maple tree taps.
My god, wouldn't that be glorious.apollo wrote:I'll shut up.

Re: Minnesota State applies for NCHC
My first reaction to the possibility of BG's moving to the NCHC was it won't happen because travel would cost too much. There'd be two flights to Colorado. But there would be no trip to Alaska, WMU is closer than Ferris, and we'd have Miami. We apparently play the latter two every season, anyway. There'd be no trip to Huntsville. If the boys can take a bus to Bemidji they can take one to Duluth, St. Cloud, and Grand Forks. Tougher competition would be good.

Re: Minnesota State applies for NCHC
There does seem to be some benefits to the NCHC and on the surface it seems like the tougher competition and higher profile opponents could benefit BGSU's rise back to championship level. On the other hand, look at WMU and Miami- both were quickly becoming championship contenders in the old CCHA but since moving to the NCHC, both programs have taken hits. Miami has made the NCAA Tourney only once in the past 3 NCHC season after making the tournament 9 of 10 seasons in the CCHA over 10 years. Western reached the NCAA Tourney in 2011 and 2012, missed the postseason but had a 19-win season in the final year of the CCHA and since joining the NCHC has slumped to a low of 8-wins in 2015-16. Although Western has never been historically a power team, they did seem to be on that path in the later years of the CCHA and have since reverted to mediocrity.BG84 wrote:My first reaction to the possibility of BG's moving to the NCHC was it won't happen because travel would cost too much.
