Knapke or Morgan?

Post by jpfalcon09 »

Figured with all the debate across multiple threads about the QB situation we could get the temperature of the fans.

Knapke for now. He knows the offense and has led a championship effort before.

Morgan is the future. At some point this this year he may well take over. I wouldn't be surprised one bit if by November Morgan is the starter.

My inclination is to give both of the guys equal time these next two weeks and see where we are once MAC play starts.

Morgan seems to have great physical tools. Can he learn to be a great quarterback?

But, as I've said, this is Mike Jinks's call.

Time to move on soon. Let Morgan learn from his mistakes because Knapke hasn't. Won't win the East with QB play like this. In 2014 he was bailed out by a stud WRs, he doesn't have that now.

I agree with all of you for the most part. I am in the camp of giving both guys time for the next two weeks and make a choice moving forward against Eastern and into conference play. When Clawson pulled Schilz for MattyJ was the smartest and bravest move of a BG coach in a long time. I wish this situation was as clear cut for Jinks to make.

I'm not ready to pull the plug on Knapke yet, but it's getting really close. The thing is I want him to succeed so much in his final season, but I have major concerns. Babers raved about him last year saying he was the most improved player on the team. That talk now looks more like coach speak. I was expecting to see a much better player this year, but I feel like I'm still watching the same version of him from the second half of 2014. As mentioned above, we have two games to figure this out because come the MAC portion of the schedule, if we're still having this debate (which I think we will be) then we'll be in trouble.

I 100% agree. And think about this, that decision wasn't easy to justify on the surface because you had a player in Schilz who was returning for his senior season and who had started the previous three years. But as we all quickly found out, it was the correct call and it sure panned out well. No way would we have won the MACC that year over an undefeated and nationally ranked NIU team with Schilz.

Count me in as seeing both the next 2 weeks. I really want KMan to succeed but I also want the guy who gives us the best chance of winning to play. Morgan has all the tools to be the next stud QB. Reminds me of Tyler Sheehan and Ty turned out to be a great QB.

I don't really know what Morgan's performance has been through camp, practice, etc....All I do know is you aren't winning a championship with the QB play we've gotten thus far. I wouldn't wait around...I'd make a move.

Knapke has to go. I didn't think he was good in 2014 and he isn't good this year. I really wish we still had Callaway on the roster. He threw a really nice ball and was a good athlete. I just have the 2014 Toledo game in my head when it comes to Knapke and that was one of the ugliest games i've ever seen.

This...without question. How many wide open TD's did he overthrow in that game. And on the other one, he lead our receiver out of bounds and nullified the catch.

I remember at least 5....we should have scored 45+ that night and lost 27-20.

To me, I feel like I'm watching Matt Schilz all over again in a lot of ways with Knapke. They are both very similar in that they were/are experienced senior QB's who we really hoped would take off in their final year, but fizzled instead. Both are guys are/were capable of winning, but were consistently inconsistent - and not even from game to game, but often from one half to another and even cases of every other drive. It's not like they are terrible, they just don't have the "it" that you need at the position, both from their demeanor on the field to the actual performance itself. With a guy like Johnson, you could see had "it" when he was out there playing and he was out there making place both from their demeanor on the field to the actual performance itself. With a guy like Johnson, you could see had "it" when he was out there playing and he was out there making plays.

In 2013 we were in a position almost any coach would want to be in, with a three-year returning starter QB at the helm. But that lasted all of two series in tbd opener before Clawson made what turned out to be a brilliant move in replacing Schilz with Johnson. Three years later, here we are again with a quarterback who has a lot of experience and essentially was our starter all of 2014. Last year we heard he was the most improved player on the team. But two games into the season, he looks very much like the guy we knew in the second half of 2014.

If we could see the Knapke vs Indiana in 2014 he could take over this team and get this offense rolling. But that guy seems like he hung up his cleats two years ago.

I think the Indiana game was an outlier. That was a team with an absolutely wretched pass defense that was going up against an offense in which little film existed. Couple that with the talent that BG had at WR (Lewis, Moore, Burbrink) and Greene at RB and it made his day that much more productive. Fast forward to this year and only Ronnie Moore is back, the running backs have struggled to get going and guys like Phoutavong and Redding have made little to no impact thus far.

I don't want to beat up on the guy because I obviously support him, and one wonders just how much belief the coaches and players have in Morgan. Knapke has the experience factor on his side which you believe should increase his confidence, but we haven't seen that yet out of him. He seems like the type of dude who would respond well to poor play, but again we haven't seen a response that's been consistent. I have a feeling this debate will be settled after the Memphis game...either Knapke will raise his level of play the next two weeks or we'll be seeing a redshirt freshman getting tossed into the fire once conference play begins.
