I find this an interesting comment. Back in the heyday of BG hockey the hockey team consistently outdrew basketball, much to the chagrin of many of the basketball fans. Guess what? BG hockey is once again outdrawing basketball. To date hockey has averaged 2623 fans per game, and with the two remaining games being MSU and Michigan that average will rise (Given that there were about 4300 fans there for WMU this past Saturday, you can expect at least that many for MSU and more for Michigoon.). Meanwhile basketball is drawing an average of 2420 per game. I've been saying for years that once the team started winning consistently the fans would come back.Bleeding Orange wrote: Unfortunately, hockey is without a doubt the least popular sport of the "Big 3" here at BGSU, but it does so much for our university.
At the very least, hockey is on equal footing with basketball as far as popularity in this town. Come to a game and you'll find out why.
I believe it was 1959, but it was not the main division.bg77 wrote:Dayons_Den wrote:Falcon30 wrote:And we have how many national championships in each?

Now when are you going to start that thread about which has more tradition!!
Maybe I'm missing something in this message, but when did we win a national championship in football?

I believe it was 1959, but I don't understand why we don't recognize it. We have our MAC championships on the press box of the stadium, but not our most recent West championship or the National Championship. I may be in the minority here but we have just as much right to claim that one as any of the big boys have claiming the recent championships. Maybe that will change if the NCAA decides to regulate a national championship in football. But, I don't think hell (ie Ann Arbor)is planning on freezing over anytime soon.

BG Hockey will be on the national scene on a regular basis, so you better start checking the hockey board!Falcon52 wrote:I like hearing any tid bit about BG when it hits the national spotlight level. I don't think I have ever clicked on the Hockey Forum (maybe by mistake), so I would not have known about the SI article.
Anything that helps promote BG Athletics on a national level is OK to post here in my mind.

"BG was relentless. It's like they know that a good first pass on the breakout from a defenseman will almost always result in an odd-man rush against them - but they go in anyway and dare you to make that pass. All three of their goals were just grit and effort. That's a team any fan can be proud to support...they give all they've got."

Bowling Green defeated Deleware in the 1959 College Division National Championship game. At the time there was no Division 1, 1AA, 2, that came much later. In 1959 there was the University Division and the College Division. I would equate that wo winning a 1AA Championship today- Deleware is still a national player at the 1AA level.bg77 wrote:Maybe I'm missing something in this message, but when did we win a national championship in football?Dayons_Den wrote:Falcon30 wrote:And we have how many national championships in each?

A team large team photo (about the size of the hoops and vb photos in the halls of Memorial Hall) used to hang above the steps in Anderson Arena with "1959 National Champion" at the top in large letters...not sure if it is still there or if it went missing like the Nate Thurmond jersey(s).

I didn't think it was a national championship "game" as much as a title given to them by an association or pollsters or something. In fact, I don't think if there WAS a NC game, it was against Delaware, since we beat Ohio U. the next week.

Hmmm well that would make sense because of the O.U. game. .. I am just tryin to replicate what I can remember with no media guides in front of me. I believe you are correct then TG- no NC game, but Deleware was a top team, we beat them, thereby vaulting us to earn the championship by the UPI or whomever. Deleware still is a national power at 1AA.TG1996 wrote:I didn't think it was a national championship "game" as much as a title given to them by an association or pollsters or something. I'll have to research the 1959 season for a story on its own... assistance is appreciated.
I just remember them talking about "mythical" national championships around then, and incidentally, we LOST to OU the next year or would have gone back-to-back.

That photo hung on the West side of the arena and was taken down due to the poor condition of the frame as I understand it. The department didn't want gravity to take it down on top of a fan. I have no idea if there are plans of re-framming it, but I hope so. It needs to be ready for the 50 year ccelbration in 2009

hummmmmm, that sounds like this years national champion. A title given by pollsters (and computers) or something.......I didn't think it was a national championship "game" as much as a title given to them by an association or pollsters or something.

a) No.
b) It current residence is the 6th floor of the Library in the 2nd level of the Archives. The 6th floor is not open to the public and is mostly stacks and storage for old files and a giant pile of trophies. The old frame is on it and something tells me that it will be reframed for disply in the new Sebo Center when it opens, but I can't say that for sure.
And see, someone made a hockey post in the football forum (OMG!!!! THE WORLD IS ENDING!!!!!! **EXTREME sarcasm and offense intended**) and see what you all have learned? Let's try to simmer down in the future, eh?
