What if?
I know that we are not accustomed to losing what has been happening as of late, but what if?
What if Jinks came in after Clawson and ran his program? Would he be successful having a stocked cupboard of athletes. Have Babers, McCloud and company work with the guys that are here now. (Young and not as battle tested )Would their fortunes be different? Before Babers was hired, he was the front runner at EMU, but pulled his name knowing that he may get the BG gig. Could he have done the things at EMU that he did at BG. Would Jinks be the guy going to a P5 school?
Like an earlier post put it, 3 new head coaches in 5 years. Tough to maintain the success while learning new systems. NIU, CMU had their coaching carousels. Now that Carey has exhausted all of Doreen's recruits, look at the roster and look at current record. One of the few college HC's that inherited a loaded team, and has been able to sustain and would leave a program in good shape should they leave is Shaw from Stanford. Another I think is Herman from Houston. Then again, money talks for those schools as well.
I'm just saying, let's give Jinks a chance to right the ship, even though it may be a painful process.

Posted much of a similar line of thinking in another thread. Success in the G5 is fleeting, especially when you have the type of turnover at BG. As noted, Carey is having similar issues at NIU and even stAte is struggling under Blake Anderson, their 3rd coach in five years as well. We're likely heading for another 2-3 year window of re-building, but with the MAC East being so poor the total impact may not necessarily be all that large.

Re: What if?
Agreed.
I never really liked Babers as the Head Coach here. I thought they should have tried to build off of what Clawson built, instead of someone who completely dismantled a Championship defense. Babers came in to take over a loaded team and introduced a flashy system that scores a ton of points and puts butts in seats. I think that is the only reason he was hired away. He really didn't accomplish much here. Yes, he won the MAC Championship, but he should have won it both years (and beat Toledo both years) with the talent he had to work with starting from Day 1.

Re: What if?
I agree. I was very disappointed that we didn't bring in someone who would continue the program in the same mold of what Clawson had built. For someone who values playing tough defense, watching the complete lack of it from this years team and for the most part, Babers teams while he was here, is like fingernails on a chalkboard.
I know, we've beaten that horse to death on this board and no need to open up that discussion again, but glad to see Clawson seems to be turning the corner at Wake. They haven't exactly played a killer schedule, but it's been a while since they were 4-0. Got a good shot at making a bowl this year for the first time in a long time. I hope they get there.

Re: What if?
Something this thread made me think about though was Clawson and his adaptability. He coached and built teams based on the roster. We have talent on the current roster. I think we may be better served to go with a "run first" mentality, slow the game down, and develop our raw young QB. No sense in pissing a year away trying to go fast if we don't have all the pieces in place to go fast all the time. We have a solid line and good corps of backs. Let's slow the game down, mix in some fastball, and see what happens.

Exactly...He needs to talk to a Marine..."Improvise..Adapt...Overcome"
Slow the game down...eat some clock and protect the defense until they can develop.

Agree with this. Babers did this a little bit in 2014 later in the season when the weather became less desirable.Flipper wrote:Exactly...He needs to talk to a Marine..."Improvise..Adapt...Overcome"

I think after tomorrow, we will have a much better idea if there is any hope left for the Jinks Project.

Re: What if?
Again, hyperbole. People were saying the same thing about PJ Fleck in his first year at WMU, that's turned out in their favor. If you don't think Jinks is going to work out, call up Moose and get ready to open up your checkbook.slashba33 wrote:I think after tomorrow, we will have a much better idea if there is any hope left for the Jinks Project.

Another stretch comparison. PJ Fleck took over a 4-8 football team and went 1-11 his first year. Their worst loss was 59-3 at Iowa and TSUN put 47 later on them. They were not picked to win their division and go back to the MAC. Hell, they only lost 26-13 to Michigan State that year...the BIG TEN and ROSE Bowl champs. Given the results of their first four non-conf. games, I would say they would be favored by 10 pts. if that team played us tomorrow. I wish I could have some of your optimism, but reality is in the way.

I don't have optimism, but I'm not going to throw a coach and his staff under the bus four games into his tenure. The real reality is that BGSU doesn't have the money to buy out his contract anyways, so the persistent complaining about the state of the program is largely falling on deaf ears outside of this board.slashba33 wrote:jpfalcon09 wrote:Again, hyperbole. Re: What if?
Agree 100% about taking the air out of the ball by running. Give the QB some manageable throws to get the first downs. Might not be the most exciting thing to see, but it allows the offense to build some confidence and give our D less time on the field.
Re: What if?
Jinks' contract is $410,000 per year, for five years. He has a buyout clause of $300,000 if he leaves before Dec. 15, 2017.jpfalcon09 wrote:I don't have optimism, but I'm not going to throw a coach and his staff under the bus four games into his tenure. Re: What if?
Right, if he leaves. If he's fired then BG is on the hook for paying off the rest of his contract. $410,000 x 5 years = $2,050,000.slashba33 wrote:Jinks' contract is $410,000 per year, for five years.
