As a person who was around the hockey program from 2007-09, I can assure you they are leaps and bounds better than now than then. There's no debate.
Interesting that those who should know think that we are a top 20 team. 14th in fact.

We're all entitled to opinions, but it'd be nice to see some positive comments once in awhile.

Apollo,
Do you ever add anything positive to any thread?

Not really....Eventually BG will finally get into the NCAA tournament. It's just a matter time...we've put a ton of money into the program and play in the second worst league in the country. This year especially the WCHA schedule is a joke. I certainly don't think Bergeron is a dummy, he's clearly doing a solid job. We're just not anything more than average. If we played the competition we played 5 years ago everyone would be ready to fire Bergeron. I'm just not fooled by the schedule. Sorry if you don't like it...it's my opinion.
Yes, it is your opinion. Average team? I want what you're smoking. Bergeron is doing a fantastic job. You seem to forget just how far the program fell after the 90's...it was BAD. This team is pretty loaded and will be out for blood.

As much as I would like to see BG win the whole thing, loaded might not be what I would call them. North Dakota, Minnesota, Denver, BC, ect.. are loaded.

Guess we'll find out...19 returning lettermen, 10 of the top 11 scorers from last year and the entire Goalie unit, including Nell.

The entire goalie unit, except Burke.

As for scoring, our guys don't necessarily have to score more total goals. Last season's scoring was uneven. The left column is the number of games in which BG scored a certain number of goals.

Code: Select all

	BG	Opp
0 3 4
1 10 10
2 9 14
3 5 7
4 8 5
5 1 1
6 5 0
7 1 1
8 0 0
Although scoring 4 or more goals 15 times is pretty darn good, scoring 0 or 1 goals 13 times isn't a recipe for many victories.

There's no doubt that scoring has to improve. Hopefully the crackdown on interference, holding, etc. will help. We are faster than most teams in the WCHA but the constant obstruction and lack of calls is the great equalizer. It's hard to use your speed if someone is holding/impeding you.

Obviously, the key to success is to always score exactly six goals every game.

No, no, no. The left column is the number of goals. The other two are the numbers of times BG opponents scored that many goals. But I think you-all understood that.

Saw an analysis done by one of those USCHO stat guys that correlated the number of goals scored in a game against the % of games won. If I recall the "breakeven" was slightly more than 3 goals across the entire NCAA. Did the same for our season last year. Yep, when we score 3 or more we win a lot of games. Less than 3 goals? Not so much.

Code: Select all

Goals Scored % Games Won*
     0 0%
     1 0%
     2 44%
     3 100%
     4 86%
     5 88%
     6 100%
     7 100%

*I counted a tie as a loss for this analysis

Scoring probably not going to be helped by Hawkins leaving the program. Just saw it on twitter

No idea. Sad to see him go, he always seemed like a pretty nice guy. Hopefully things work out for him in the future

You guys were right... clearly leaps and bounds better than the mid 2000s....should be ranked 8th or 9th on Monday when the polls come out.

Saying "I told you so" 2 games into he season: does that somehow make your penis bigger? This is the hockey board. Nobody cares who's is bigger.
