Great Moments in the BGSU Ice Arena

Post by Falcon Fanatic »

"The Bowling Green State University Athletics Department is celebrating 50 years of the BGSU Ice Arena this season, culminating on Feb. 11, 2017 to honor the 50th anniversary of the arena's grand opening on Feb. 25, 1967. The Falcons will host Mercyhurst on that date, in what will be the team's final non-conference game of the 2016-17 season.

Leading up to the anniversary, BGSU Athletics is taking a look back at some of the great moments in BGSU Ice Arena history. For the first edition of this series, we look back at the Falcons' first-ever sweep of a WCHA team when they took down North Dakota on Dec. 7-8, 1990"

"Regarding BGSU, I would think their biggest strength is that they never give up, They never slow down and they battle hard even after the other team scores. We have to be on our game and never, ever take the foot off the gas for a second."

"BG was relentless. It's like they know that a good first pass on the breakout from a defenseman will almost always result in an odd-man rush against them - but they go in anyway and dare you to make that pass. All three of their goals were just grit and effort. That's a team any fan can be proud to support...they give all they've got."

One of my earliest memories of BGSU Hockey. If I remember correctly, at least one game was nationally televised on PASS Sports, which was a huge deal back then. I also seem to remember 7 North Dakota players in the penalty box at one time. And 5 in BG's.

OMG, I forgot about that! Both team's players had to stand as there wasn't enough to sit. It was hilarious to watch! Great memory!!!

Geez...could write a book with all the memories!

From my first games back when the original bleacher creatures patrolled the first rows of Section A to:

-Waiting outside in the freezing cold in lines for hours.
-All the incredible players...my favorite being Jamie Wansbrough.
-Scoring 12 goals in back-2-back games against SUNY-Buffalo back in the day
-Geoff Williams coming off the bench for possibly his only shift and scoring a game-winning goal against MSU.
-Heckling Ron Mason, Jerry Welsh and Frank Anzalone...and Tastes Great...Doug Claggett when he returned with the buckeyes.
-Heckling Ferris State's Darrin Fridgen...and then meeting him after the game at Myles and he was the nicest guy.
-Getting a stick from my favorite Bronco Wayne Gagne.
-Jerry Welsh turning directly at me during a game and screaming "NICE FACE!" Then asking him about it a year or so later and him saying: "Oh, that was you?"
-Shaking Referee Pi's hand before each game...another great guy...for a ref!
-The 15-minute standing ovation against Michigan when we were losing.
-The brawl game with NHL trainee referee Dave Jackson...who still does NHL games and STILL SUCKS!!!
-Buying "one" ticket from a MSU student to a sold out game when I needed 2, and then finding out she actually gave me 2 tickets! Then seeing her inside and denying the whole thing...LOL
-Finding a dropped press pass from a BGSU radio or print guy and then using it to get in free the rest of that season...and then just strolling in parts of the next season until the guy at the back gate finally asked me if I had the current one...LOL
-Listening to the great Tom Glick announce our goals and his famous "1 minute to the Joe!"

I could go on all day.

My wife and I went to a BG hockey game on our 2nd date. Don't remember who we played...pretty sure we won. Notable evening because I pulled her out of the way of a flying puck that was on a path towards her head...I think it clipped a lady behind us.

Sucked to be her... :)

Yeah...but I have a ton of work to do...lol. But a couple more:

-The time when BGSU President Paul Olscamp crowd surfed from the bottom of Section E all the way to the top!
-When we played that Russian select team (that destroyed us), their coaches came up the back of the stands expecting a back door to their bench. Not knowing they had to access it from the ice.
-The old chants..."No No! The puck must proceed the player!"
-Handing Tootsie Rolls over the glass to Gary Kruzicn during the pre-game skate.
-Throwing trash into the old-school zamboni as it passed.
-Serenading Notre Dame their last visit when they temporarily scrapped their hockey program.
-The celebration after the NCAA Championship. I remember Gary Galley with this huge cigar in his mouth.

It's unfortunate that I am terrible at recalling memories. Well, it might be fortunate for those involved. I could write a book based on the 7 years I worked for the team.

I remember when they first started to really try and do promotional crap during intermissions. They drug stuff out too long and the nets wouldn't be set when the team was supposed to take the ice. Tyler Masters was goaltender and would lead the team on the ice. For the protection of the ice crew, we had to hold the team in the room until they finished with the nets (if you know Tyler, you know what I'm talking about). Michigan liked to use their own schedule when they came to town. They didn't care that the rule book said "home team takes the ice first." It was a mind game to them. The one game, we (me and another equipment guy) decided we'd had enough of their crap (and feared the wrath of Masters) so we stood shoulder to shoulder on the carpet walkway so they couldn't get by. After some minor pushing and shoving, and the University officers stepping in, our guys took the ice first.

I remember the BU series well. On Friday night, my friends had made a huge sign that said:

"Give the Terriers a Rabies-Shot in the Ass" and hung it in the back of the stands.

Ice arena management came and took it down pretty quickly.

Good times!

This is the very first game that BGFan and I went to. We had moved back to BG in the summer of '83. I had gone to a handful of games back when I was a freshman ('77-'78 season, prior to meeting my future Falcon Flame), but hadn't gone since then. I had been following their success in the BG News early in the season and convinced BGFan to go. He had never been to a hockey game. We were hooked and we have only missed a handful games since that epic first one! :supz:

GO FALCONS!!!!

Next up, March 4, 1988, when the Falcons beat Ferris State for a key playoff victory in the longest home game in BGSU history.

As soon as I saw the subject of the latest one, I immediately thought "Matt Ruchty!"
