Some really ill-timed penalties by the defense was the difference in the game. Late hit, PI and facemask.

Yup. Too many penalties. And poor secondary play but a certain # that I'm not going to mention anymore. Great effort. Better than anyone expected.

Good game and typical of a rivalry. We gave them a TD but BG came to win. Huge step forward this week and TU is an "also ran" team for another year.

Then, when there are 60 some seconds left, LET THEM SCORE! Instead, you gave them a 1st and goal and they ran out the clock so we have no timeouts and the ball with less than 20 seconds.

That's what I commented on during the end of the game. We had one timeout left. Just let them score with 1:20 left. And if you're going to pooch on your kick-off you may as well just kick them out of bounds and start at the 35. Those things as well as a defensive player just giving up numerous times on plays is what cost us today.

If u guys recall, we used that pooch kickoff last yr under Babers. Doesn't make a hell of a lot of sense since we now know Fields CAN kick touchbacks. Why give up 10-17 yds for free, even if they fair catch the ball ( which they didn't late in game).
And the Personal fouls on D were an absolute killer!
OTOH, it was nice to see BG play so much better than at any time this yr.

Fields was hitting touchbacks when he had the wind at his back, but yes I don't know why you would kick it short and give a team free yards. The odds are in your favor of stopping a guy from running the kick back 95-100 yards instead of putting your defense in a really tough position.

I think he knew the best chance at winning and the best way to preach his mentality would be to keep fighting and force a FG attempt where they already missed an XP.

Kicking short and hoping for a fumble is a low percentage play and only punishes your defense by having to defend a shorter field. There's essentially no advantage to doing it outside of the one in hundred chance something bounces your way.

After watching Toledo today I'm not sure they can stay with Western for a full four quarters. Thank goodness we don't play Western this year...that'd be another blowout.
