Is Davidson going to leave BG early?

Post by BGSU33 »

We've had a QB do it (Omar Jacobs) and a WR do it (Roger Lewis), but could the next player who leaves early be a punter? According to Mike Jinks, maybe. I watched the presser today and Jinks made mention of it and said something along the lines of trying/hoping to get Davidson to come back next season. I guess I never really gave the idea of a punter ever leaving early much thought before. Being that he is our best player, it would be a big blow if he leaves. I got the impression a decision will be made after the season.

Also, Jinks said it's likely going to take two more years to get the roster where they want it to be with proper numbers and the type of players he wants. He said he wants 16 scholarship WR's and right now we only have 8. He also mentioned some of the guys who have burned their redshirted this year and mentioned a few who really have no business playing this season but are out of need.

Whatever...if he was so worried about the roster, he should have come to BG after he was hired rather than stay at TTU an extra month. Maybe he could've recruited some extra receivers.
33 and I were two of the only people expecting us to take a little bit of a step back this year. I was expecting a 4-6 loss season including a bowl game. This season however is an embarrassment...yes we'll win a few games down the stretch, but one close loss to UT isn't exactly back on track in my opinion.

I've never heard of a punter leaving early ...

Yeah it's a position in the NFL with little turnover. Only one roster spot per team. Plus it is extremely rare for a kicker or punter to go in the first 3 rounds.

I t took Clawson a few years to get the roster squared away...Dino recruited some talented guys and he recruited some guys who maybe weren't so talented. If this follows the usual trend we'll limp along this year...improve some next year...maybe even be a bowl eligible team and then make a statement that third year. That's when we probably lose Jinks. Hopefully Moose will reconsider the reinvent the wheel approach of his predecessor consider hiring from within

If Davidson gets his degree early...he could walk next year as the college equivalent of a FA

I listened to the press conference. The Davidson line sounded like hyperbole.

I didn't take it as hyperbole at all. But after thinking about it more, I'm guessing it might have to do more with Davidson possibly graduating after this year with a year of eligibility remaining and getting him to come back over leaving early for the NFL, where he could possibly have a future.

Another option would be graduate school.

This might be the case.

The Bears punter did this. He played at Cincinnati for his first four years and played for the Hurricanes as a graduate student and lit it up.

No offense to BG, but he could possibly play for a B10 team (Michigan perhaps since they are losing their punter after this year) and get much more exposure. Or he could play somewhere south and pad his stats.

Ball State's Brad Maynard certainly proved that you can punt in the MAC, be really good, gain plenty of exposure and be rewarded at the next level. He was drafted in the 3rd round and had a long NFL career and didn't need to bolt out the door for a Big Ten program. Or how about Ohio's Dave Zastudil. Worked out well for him too. It irks me when I hear people talking about how guys needing to get more exposure elsewhere to play in the NFL. Look on any NFL team's roster and you were going to see guys from small schools all over the place (G5's, FCS and even some D-2 and D-3). If you can play, the NFL will find you.

Amen to that... it seems to me that punting is pretty much a numbers game.... Can you kick it straight a long ways?? Can you pin an opponent deep?? I think the balls and the fields are pretty similar from college to college....

Sorry if that came off the wrong way. This not a slander on the conference at all, but it is no secret that punting at BG is difficult (or any other place in the MAC for that matter). The conference is full of stadiums that are open, windy, and cold. Kickers down south have a huge advantage...especially in places like The Swamp or Death Valley where the stadiums are enclosed, less windy and near 80 degrees year round. Those are ideal conditions for passing, kicking, punting.

Davidson's success in this conference is a testament to his raw ability and mechanics. The ball launches off his foot like it did with for Pat Fleming or Andy Pollock. But it is scary to think how much further he would be hitting the ball if he was punting for Florida or Florida State, or a dome for that matter.
