If Bowling Green ever needs to save money by eliminating a sport, baseball is the very first place I would look.

Down 3-0 at end of 1st. In case you didn't know yet, our defense sucks.

This season is not starting out well. I think the early preseason rankings did not help things

One thing Bergeron has always seemed to do well is manage the goaltending position. He inherited Hammond and then got a lot out of the guys he recruited. It's really tough to overcome soft goals and bad goaltending in general. If/when that improves, the team will start winning again consistently.
Re: vs Ohio State
I wouldn't have dreamed *defense* would be a problem this season. Sometimes it's the goaltending and sometimes it's leaving the goaltender hanging out to dry. I thought the guys played pretty darn well Friday, other than giving up five goals. They were able to keep the puck in the offensive zone for minutes at a time. Saturday was a mess; is that what the game at Western looked like?

Re: vs Ohio State
Early in the season so there's time to make a solid run and turn things around. Even if it's in the second half, there's still potential to make a push in the WCHA playoffs, come into the conference playoffs as an underdog and surprise people from there on into NCAA tourney.
That said, there was some concerning issues that the defense looked soft at times and goaltending couldn't stop a high quality scoring chance when they did get through the D. A few soft goals like under the leg pad too. Even in some of the worse years of the program, we got solid goaltending from guys like Spratt, Eno, Hammond, etc... Goaltending had been the one elite point even on some of those Paluch/Williams era teams. By contrast, goaltending flat out didn't look good this weekend. BG is essentially a mid-major team for hockey, we're not a basement program just scraping by in a rec rink but we're not an elite team that wins and makes Frozen Four year in and year out. Strong goaltending is a common factor that those mid-majors have when they go on post season runs, Bemidji and UMD a few years ago, more recently Ferris.
Other than goalies, it didn't seem like we have "That Guy" that the team can turn to to put the team on his back and score those timely goals needed to 1) close game out, 2) pull close and turn momentum when down. Especially on Saturday, they went down a couple goals early and just seemed to fold it up. There wasn't someone that led the team to change momentum and add energy- those are contagious and can really change a game.

"I thought the team played well other than giving up five goals"....ranks right up there with "other than that..how did you enjoy the play, Mrs Lincoln?"...
It's not the fall that hurts...it's when you hit the ground.
