Well we've gotten to the point in the year where traditionally, people start drawing up their vision of college football's postseason championship tournament. Granted, in prior years this exercise was more relevant because BG was often involved in such a bracket...not so much this year. So I'm doing a twist on this exercise this year. In addition to the best 16 teams making it into the Bgsufalcon24 CFP...I'm also going to do a reverse bracket with the 16 worst teams using the same criteria. If you can imagine a world where, like European soccer, the worst teams get sent down to the next lower division for next year (in this case Division I-AA/FCS), would BG be facing such a fate right now? Let's see.
Winner's Tournament
#1 Alabama (SEC)
#16 Arkansas State (Sun Belt)
#8 Penn State (At-Large)
#9 Colorado (At-Large)
#5 Wisconsin (At-Large)
#12 Western Michigan (MAC)
#4 Clemson (ACC)
#13 Boise State (Mt West))
#6 Washington (Pac-12)
#11 Louisville (At-Large)
#3 Michigan (B1G)
#14 Navy (American)
#7 Oklahoma (Big XII)
#10 Oklahoma State (At-Large)
#2 Ohio State (At-Large)
#15 Western Kentucky (C-USA)
Clearly that is a great tournament. But what about the one for the losers? We'll say for sake of argument that these games would be single matchup "bowl" games, and that the losing team of each would be relegated to FCS for 2017.
#1 Fresno State (Mt West)
#16 Connecticut (At-Large)
#8 Virginia (ACC)
#9 Tulane (American)
#5 UTEP (C-USA)
#12 Florida Atlantic (At-Large)
#4 Rutgers (B1G)
#13 Kent State (At-Large)
#6 Arizona (Pac-12)
#11 Massachusetts (At-Large)
#3 Buffalo (MAC)
#14 San Jose State (At-Large)
#7 Kansas (Big XII)
#10 Missouri (SEC)
#2 Texas State (Sun Belt)
#15 Purdue (At-Large)
The At-Larges were pretty tough to consider in the loser's bowls. BG was one of the teams I considered, also on that bubble were East Carolina, Marshall, Illinois, Iowa State, Utah State, Oregon State, and Georgia State.
Be interesting to see how this shakes out in the next two weeks...
