LSSU

Post by apollo »

Big series for BG...first time they've played a decent opponent in awhile.

BG and Lake St are the top two teams in the WCHA in scoring, so we could see some offense.

Lake State takes some penalities...be interesting if we can get some PPGs this weekend?

Overall we should win both, but we have a tendency to not play focused and play sloppy for periods at a time. 4-3 BG, 4-2 LSSU

Aside from the Western series, our tendency is to play without passion on Friday so if we lose it'll be tonight's contest.

BG scores a goal with 1 minute left in the 1st. Nell on his game tonight with 11 1st period saves.

BG up 1-0 after 1.

End of the 2nd, BG still leads 1-0.

Start the third 4 on 4 after Spezia gets cut by the butt-end of a stick while checking a player.

Give up 2 goals in the 3rd to go down 2-1 with 8 min left.

Lost 2-4 due to an empty net goal. No way in hell should that first LSSU goal have counted. Guy didn't even play the puck, just dove into Nell.

Definitely the refs fault....no question

Still plenty of time until the Frozen Four...they'll figure it out

If you'll notice, I didn't say "refs cost BG the game." I said "no way in hell that first LSSU goal should have counted." I don't comment during play because I'd rather watch the game than stare at my phone.

Diving into the crease to make a play on the puck is one thing, to dive into the goaltender without making a play on the puck becomes goaltender interference. The puck was under Nell's right pad. The player who dove into him, causing the puck to do in the net, had his stick above Nell's right pad. We all know if BG had "scored" that goal, the review would have taken 30 minutes, and been overturned. Have seen good goals called back with less contact with the goaltender.

As for "costing the game." The shitty defensive play cost them the game. Leaving players wide open in front of the net, facing the net and watching the puck instead of picking up the player coming in, or being ready to make a play on the puck. That cost them the game. It was just a shitty call on the other team's first goal.

That call...goalie interference...has mutated so much at seemingly all levels of hockey. Used to waive goals off if you were in the crease...at all. Now you can fire the puck on goal, come barreling in like a maniac and wipe out the goalie and still score if the puck looked like it was going past him first.

It's like crosschecking in the NHL...a good two handed whack in the back is fine in the corners or the crease, but if you even tap the guy chipping the puck in it's interference.
It's not the fall that hurts...it's when you hit the ground.

Referees were given more discretion starting last season.

Rule 73 - Interference on the Goalkeeper
73.5 Overall Philosophy - Officials must use a philosophy of “when in doubt, the goal must count.” Unless the official is certain that a goal was scored through an illegal action (e.g., physically hindering the goalkeeper’s ability to move freely while in the crease and defend the goal), the goal must count. Games that have video replay available may correct egregious errors.

The NCAA put out a video about this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zH0pRc4xDXE.
