How much will BG profit from WMU in Cotton Bowl

Post by gmartin »

For some reason I thought BG would get much more money from WMU going to the Cotton Bowl. However according to the Detroit News;

It's quite the prize for a MAC team that will earn the conference about $3 million, after it pays for its travel expenses, tickets and meals. It's also quite the reward, given that the last MAC team to finish an entire season undefeated was Marshall in 1999, and it finished the season in the Motor City Bowl at the Pontiac Silverdome.

That said 3 million divided by the 12 schools is only $250,000. I thought it would be closer to 1 million per school.

Thought I'd addressed this earlier in another thread. According to an ath. Dept. source, we were told ALL bowl money and Maction money is pooled together before dividing it among all conf. Teams. I'm assuming BG 's share last yr. might be more than this yr, based on success level differences. But we were told that BG got 1.3 MILLION bucks last yr., which is why we don't complain about 2 nite home games w/ minimal attendance.

You did address it '61. And all bowl money is combined and dispersed to each member of the conference after expenses are paid. I just thought the Cotton Bowl had a higher payout.

In 2013 when Northern Illinois played in the Orange Bowl the payout to Northern was 17 million

The Cotton Bowl payout is 3.675 million before expenses. So that's a big difference.

It's close to a million bucks per school. Group of 5 conferences split somewhere around $50 million every year. The conference who has the group of 5 champion gets approx 15 million out of that 50. Its a significant payout for us.

Torpedo the Big12...take Oklahoma and Texas and put them in the B1G. The PAC 12 can take 4 teams that are left in the Big 12 and the ACC and SEC can take 2 more ...or one more and Notre Dame. and then we'll have a nice neat 4 league 16 team per super conference deal. The rest of us shake out into 16 team leagues that make some sense geographically . The MAC is probably the most sensible conference of all in that respect. They play for a 4 team playoff in the bowls, we play for a 4 team playoff from our bowls with our championship being played on New Year's day in a warm weather venue.

The P5 will never accept a playoff that takes a MAC and/or AAC team into a playoff over their runners up. I think this is the best we can hope for, Becoming a "small school" champ...like Doyt was

Not sure what the answer is....Flip's proposal makes sense....I'd like to see the MAC put some limits on spending regardless of what is going on nationally.

Should have put an or between SEC and ACC...if B1G takes 2, the PAC 12 takes 4 and the others take 2 or 3 plus ND...that's 12 BIG 12 and there's only 10...we're going to need a team or two yet regardless...Houston? Memphis?...UConn? (hoops and hockey) Marshall? (ha)

A proposal that would make even more sense would be to eliminate baseball. Let's follow the lead of Wisconsin and Akron and refocus our efforts.

For sure...that sounds like a smart plan. Plus baseball wins MAC titles every few years, that doesn't really fit BG's athletic makeup.

Western Michigan drew a fun opponent in Wisconsin. They've already beaten two Big Ten teams. Can they beat a third? Tough matchup, but I'll watch. It would be great to see the Broncos prevail. The Broncos would be in the top 10 for sure at that point, I would think.
