Cleveland State and Temple to the MAC?
So I have heard this rumor on Cleveland talk radio two times...I hope this isn't a duplicate post - I looked for one...
Temple would join the MAC in Football and CSU join as an all-sports member (they have no football, obviously) so they together make a whole school in sports. Then another all-sports member would be added. *cough* WKU *cough*
I would love to see CSU in - the cleveland media market would be all MAC. I honestly believe that we would see more MAC coverage and we might even make inroads in the massive Ohio State propaganda here in C-town....
CSU has a great basketball facility in the Convocation Center. They are hosting the NCAA tournament this year, I believe, and have hosted it in the past. They just added women's soccer and are building a domed soccer stadium (they are putting a PVC bubble around their old stadium. I have heard that CSU is the largest University without a football team (Not sure about that)....
I LOVE adding CSU. Temple...eh.

I would love the MAC to add Cleveland State as a non-football member, but I think the chances of that happening are right at ZERO percent.
I think you are correct, it would certainly help bring the MAC more coverage in the local press. It would also be nice to have the non-football teams in Cleveland for a game every year. That would provide alumni a short drive to support the Falcons.
I just don't see it happening. Cleveland State does not fit the MAC mold in the fact that it is a TOTAL commuter school. Correct me if I am wrong, but I don't think Cleveland State has a single "on-campus" dorm room. However, I am sure there are many apartment complexes full of CSU students.
They struggle with attendance for all sports. Scanning a couple of men's basketball box scores they seem to get about 2,000 a game. They had over 4,000 for the game against Kent State though.

CSU does have one residence hall - Viking Hall. It is a 14-story building that houses 450 students.
In the next few years, an additional building (the renovated Fenn Hall) will house an additional 450...and CSU's ultimate goal is an on-campus housing of 1500 students.
For comparison, BG's capacity is approximately 7,000.

Between Kent, Akron, and our huge Cleveland area alumni base, there isn't any value in having CSU in the MAC. They really don't buy us any greater coverage than what we already get between three MAC teams covered in the area. Cutting another slice of the sports section for yet another MAC team doesn't work.
If we were going to do something in-state, YSU would be more logical, and the reasons against having them are generally agreed on.
In truth none of these reasons are the main one that I'd hold against inviting CSU. The main reason I don't think we should consider them an option is because they really are a notch below the MAC in all ways. Temple is a mistake in the first place, but to compound it by using CSU to round-out the other sports makes for a low-quality patch-work fix.

Why? Do we need a renegade program to replace Marshall?

CSU Dorms
The Dorm known as Viking Hall is a former Holiday Inn that was converted into student rooms a number of years ago. It will be interesting to see if they really DO increase the dorm capacity to 1500 students...as it would help reduce the "commuter" image of the school a bit...but I'm not sure that they'd be a positive addition to the MAC, other than the fact that they DO have some pretty nice athletic facilities. A 13,000 seat arena COULD possibly result in a switch of the MAC tournament from the Gund, which I'm sure costs the league a heck of a lot more in rental...on the other hand, it IS a 'major league' facility vs. a college facility, so who knows?

If YSU joined the MAC, Toledo would no longer be the worst school. ...and for the record I don't want YSU anywhere near the MAC either.TG1996 wrote:NWLB wrote: If we were going to do something in-state, YSU would be more logical, and the reasons against having them are generally agreed on.

Re: Cleveland State and Temple to the MAC?
I doubt there is anything to this at all.Falcon30 wrote:So I have heard this rumor on Cleveland talk radio two times...I hope this isn't a duplicate post - I looked for one...
This is what I think happened.
Roger Brown, in his Plain Dealer column over the weekend, wrote this:
"Now that the Mid-American Conference is weighing the idea of adding Temple University as a football-only member, look for growing suggestions that it also add Cleveland State as a basketball-only school. The MAC is based in Cleveland."
Read that paragraph carefully, and you will realize it is both baseless and meaningless.
Growing suggestions from who?
From Roger Brown?
It is pure wishful thinking... and I would guess talk radio picked up on it a bit.
Seriously, read that paragraph. There is nothing to it. It is clearly pure speculation.
If the MAC adds anybody, I think it's going to be Western Kentucky.
Western Kentucky's AD has been quite forthright about the fact that the MAC has sought information about Western Kentucky and that WKU is interested in the MAC.
I don't think WKU would be that open about it if they didn't think they had a heck of a shot of being invited.

Yes, another shining example of how talentless hacks are put in a spotlight and allowed to sully the reputation of journalism.Schadenfreude wrote:I doubt there is anything to this at all.Falcon30 wrote:So I have heard this rumor on Cleveland talk radio two times...I hope this isn't a duplicate post - I looked for one...
