MAC Football isn't feasible in general. I don't see how they can pay him 3 million a year especially with having a huge expense in hockey. If that's the true offer, he should just stay until his perfect job opens up. It's tough to sustain the success he had this year, but he's been recruiting better than anyone else and they'll still be really good then next couple years.Flipper wrote:It would be complete insanty to pay a MAC coach 3 mil a year. According to the report it is the big money donors who are putting up this money. The WMU athletic department has no business paying that kind of money but if the business folks in Kalamazoo and the rich alums like winning, more power to them.

Regardless of who's footing the bill...it's still stupid.

Re: Western Michigan
If this is true, I think it's great to see boosters step up and support a MAC program. Every MAC football program needs good financial support from the community. Community support is how we got a new arena built and how we got the Sebo Center built.
I love to see financial supporters step up. The question I have is whether putting a ton of money into keeping Fleck in Kalamazoo is really the best use of money. He appears to be a really dynamic coach. But are there other ways to use that money to accomplish the same goal -- build a powerhouse football program -- other than using it on the head coach's salary? That's the question I always have when these questions come up.

If I was a WMU fan I would want the scholarships endowed plus a little more endowment for the program along with that salary. That's the only way you can feel secure that rowboat stays afloat

Kalamazoo is the major city of the Kalamazoo-Portage Metropolitan Statistical Area, which has a population of 335,340 as of 2015.
--- Somewhere within the depths of this pop. came a major portion of that 3 mill I will surmise, and yes surprising with hockey rowing its own boat. But I think WMU maybe his "dream Job" with 4 small kids still in life jackets and living within the immediate area.

PJ Fleck will be introduced as Minnesota next coach. With the AD they have in place and the way he dismissed the last coach I wouldn't have accepted their offer.

Fleck is never going to be worth more than he is right now. Nor is he going to get that kind of money from anyone else. Especially in the MAC.

Re: Western Michigan
Good for Fleck. He was ridiculed for his exuberant style when he came in but it definitely resonated with the kids he was able to recruit. Be interesting to see if WMU can keep that recruiting class intact or if they'll suffer the same fate BG and NIU have.

They have reached the high water mark....In 5 or 6 years the MAC will be kicking them around again.

Re: Western Michigan
BG was in a position to dominate the East atleast through another coaching cycle. The simple ability to crawl wins 3 games in the East. Then BG made the hire they made. If Western makes the right hire they can keep the momentum, just much tougher in the West.

Re: Western Michigan
I disagree. The best thing that has happened to BG in a decade was Dino Babers leaving. He left us bare and knew it. Even with Dino here we are 6-6 and his stock takes a nose dive. You cannot thrive in November in the Midwest for more than a few seasons without a defense. We were at that point. We will be right back at the top of the MAC where we belong soon enough and will be built to stay there with a balance between offense AND defense!

Re: Western Michigan
Dino was leaving as of like mid September last season. I'm saying hire a better coach who is actually ready to be a Division 1 coach. I'll believe Jinks and staff can coach defense when I see it. Those 3 steaming piles of you know what, at the end of the season, prove nothing to me.
