Re: G5 "playoff" thoughts
I see both sides. For years, my dad has been saying the G5 need to play for their own title. We will never be a Power 5 team like osu or Michigan. Just the way it is. As Flip pointed out, our 1959 is the Small College Division NC. But it is OURS. Others have pointed out WMU...they went undefeated and don't get a sniff of the playoff. I think WMU can hang with just about anyone this year and hope to hell they beat Wisconsin.
But I wanna see BG in FBS...the biggest division. It's so difficult without having those huge budgets like the P5. IMO, it's a catch 22. I will say this...I am not watching as much college ball as I used to. At least the P5 Conf games. I still watch as much MAC as I can, other G5 conferences and FCS. but the P5's stranglehold on the system and $$$ is too much to overcome...and the NCAA sits there and does nothing. $$$ always wins.

I, as well, have no tears to shed for OSU. Nothing humbles arrogance like getting your tail kicked badly...and I think Clemson could have hung 50 on them. That Clemson D Line was IMPRESSIVE. Should be a hell of a slugfest against the Tide.Flipper wrote:Good one!!

P.J. Fleck is right. A G5 playoff would be ridiculous. And his Broncos backed him up on that today in the Cotton Bowl. The Broncos didn't win, but they showed they deserved to be on that field in Texas.

If the real playoff is ever expanded to eight, the G5 (including the MAC) deserves a seat at that table with at least one guaranteed bid to the best G5 school. A Cinderella MAC school deserves a chance to play in January, just like Western Michigan did today.

That was one of those "nice effort...but" games. Still doesn't change the dynamic...we aren't getting in. Being close at the appeasement spot isn't going to change that

I don't see how you can be so sure.Flipper wrote:Still doesn't change the dynamic...we aren't getting in.
Ten years ago, most people could never have imagined Northern Illinois and Western Michigan playing in the Orange and Cotton bowls.

Because...we don't add anything but potential for a feel good story...that isn't worth the $$$. I'd reckon that if the NCAA had the foresight to know how valuable the hoops tournament would wind up being, thy would have kept us out of that too. How many times has the MAC been screwed out of an extra bid in favor of an 18-12 "big school"?

Apparently...Ratings were off on NYE 32% from 2014...who knows...they may scrap the whole thing.

That has more to do with them playing on NYE then it does with the teams involved or quality of play.Flipper wrote:Apparently...Ratings were off on NYE 32% from 2014...who knows...they may scrap the whole thing.

Re: G5 "playoff" thoughts
I'm betting that it has to do with people not having cable anymore. I haven't watched any bowl games outside of OSU at a party. I like college football and I want to watch games, I just forget they are on and when I try to watch it it's more boring than I remember and I just end up doing something else. I would be curious what percentage of people under 30 have cable.Flipper wrote:Apparently...Ratings were off on NYE 32% from 2014...who knows...they may scrap the whole thing.

Re: G5 "playoff" thoughts
I think it's a combination of the NYE and ESPN's drop in subscribers...having the semi's on NYE is just a bad idea general..there's no tradition for football on NYE. Frankly...I think the bowl games plus one that they had with the BCS was preferable to this.

Re: G5 "playoff" thoughts
But you could have made that same argument ten years ago in explaining why a MAC school would never ever play on New Year's Day.Flipper wrote:Because...we don't add anything but potential for a feel good story...that isn't worth the $$$.
I believe the P5 needs the G5 a bit more than people realize. If you are the AD at Wake Forest or Purdue or Syracuse or Minnesota, do you want to lose the option of playing G5 schools in nonconference play? I don't think you do. Reclassification of G5 would put that at risk.
I don't know what the future holds, but I doubt the G5 is wholly without leverage here. We showed that in winning an guaranteed berth in the New Year's Day Bowls.

The MAC playing on New Year's day right now is meaningless...it's a better bowl, but what you folks want isn't a better bowl, it's a shot at the prize. We aren't getting a shot at the prize. You can fill out endless online surveys...you might even get a free oil change or something one day....but you ain't getting that $10,000 Walmart gift card they dangle.
What we should press for is this...the old BCS style format of the top ten slugging it out. Then we play ONE MORE GAME!!
The coaches get to vote....the media gets to vote...and we THE AMERICAN PEOPLE get to vote on not only the teams that play once more...but on the ten that make it into the bowls. Ryan Seacrest will host the selection show for the first 10 and the final two. As an added twist...the media and the coaches get 25% shares of the vote and WE THE PEOPLE get 50%.
WE THE PEOPLE are on equal footing with the elites!!!
It combines American Idols...college football and Trump/Brexit styled populism...s**t..throw in a hottest couple from each school swimsuit contest and you even have sex.
With ideas like this...I SHOULD fu**ing RUN AMERICA!!!

I love this. I'd add having the coaches from the top teams in question participate in a "Minute-to-Win-It" type of competition.Flipper wrote:The MAC playing on New Year's day right now is meaningless...it's a better bowl, but what you folks want isn't a better bowl, it's a shot at the prize.
