50th Anniversary Weekend

Post by BGDrew »

Kevin posted a pair of stories about this weekend's festivities.

First, about the arena itself: http://www.bgsuhockey.com/2017/02/bgsu- ... ice-arena/" target="_blank

And about Doc Emrick's humble start at BG: http://www.bgsuhockey.com/2017/02/emric ... xperience/" target="_blank

I know he had nothing to do with BGSU Hockey but he was a dear friend of Doc. I hope the Falcons have a moment of silence for Mike Ilitch at the game Saturday.

There's so much going on with this weekend, I started another thread about the game itself. I'm sitting right behind the player alumni, and it's great hearing their commentary during the game.

Wow. Doc is amazing. He is great on NBC but hearing him over the radio, priceless. Just like Ernie Harwell. They should just hom.do the 3rd period as well.

They offered to let him do the entire game. He said it was Evan's job, and he didn't want to take it from him. Instead, he'd do the second period, just how he got his start in the business. I admire even more for that. It has to be difficult for someone of his stature to just do color next to a college kid. I can't even imagine the experience it must be for Evan.

I know the arrangements and how Doc started but after hearing him WE WANT MORE. WE WANT MORE. WE WANT MORE. Evan must be on cloud nine. Imagine sending this game audio for a resume. Not too many college students can say that.

Some of the Hockey Alumni and supporters may have bought extra tickets to help the program.

Was there any mention over the weekend what BG is planning on doing with the donation of the Slater family. Any more renovations coming. I know they attempted to fix up the outside of the building but I would love if they could paint the outside of the ice arena. Maybe give one side of the arena an accent color. Maybe fix up the parking lot and blacktop and seal it correctly. Plant some small trees between the aisles. Replace the doors exiting the arena. First impressions are key. Coming in from the east side by the stadium the area of the old tennis courts is still a mess. Heck, BGSU as a whole, it's grounds keeper alone should be responsible for that.

Considering they're looking into making suites and a second 200'x85' ice sheet, I don't think they're spending part of the $2 mil on landscaping the back of the building.

Where do you think that sheet of ice is going?

The parking lot was recently redone, only complaint I have is the spots are too narrow for me to open the doors of my truck. The doors are fairly new, think they were replaced with the last renovation.

What parts of BGSU specifically need attention from the grounds keepers? It is February and everything is in snow mode right now. But I do personally know people who work in the grounds and can pass along your message directly to them.

I'm just bitching I guess but the east side of the arena, Southeast side is junky. You drive by and there are dumpsters always open and trash over spilling. They had about 15 tires over there around Thanksgiving. Some of the old netting from the tennis courts just laying on the ground. Unless you past the ice arena towards the new tennis courts or soccer field you wouldn't notice it but it's trashy. They could clean it up, make it another parking lot, replant grass. Put up a fence around all the trash dumpsters. And I agree about the parking spots narrow. I think they made them 2 inches narrower.
