Funds low at BG

Post by hiway44 »

I was eating in Chipotle in BG when about ten football players came in. The players were very polite and cordial toward my family. When asked, how the season was going to go. They think they will win the MAC! The bad news is they said the school does not have any money. No money for tutors unless you're failing. No money for the locker room and each student is on its own. I could not believe what I was hearing. No funds, No money for tutors more students will be failing. D-1 program and you cannot get tutors? That is bullshit!

Hiway,

Not sure what you ran into/ heard from these guys, but the correct word is TUTORS, not tudors.

And hope they were pulling your leg, because I believe BG has gone to the TOTAL COST of education, so at least the $$$ end should be covered.

Hard to believe we'd let kids who need TUTORING help struggle on their own. Call the AD to verify this.
Education our Challenge, Excellence our goal. (look it up)

Apparently you need a 'tudor'. I can see why they are out of money. An average 'tudor' probably costs about 400k. All depends on the craftsmanship.

The academics area of athletics just moved into a new space in the library that provides more access to resources than before. The athletes continue to outperform the rest of the MAC academically. I think we are just fine.

And coaches know that if kids aren't eligible, they can't play. "Tudoring" would be one of the last places you'd cut corners. Can't win if the kids can't play.

Ok guys, I made an error on the spelling get off my case! It was late and I just wanted to get the info out. Anyway I stand by what I wrote about the tutors. The whole group of young men all said the same thing about this. They also said, it applied to all sports team not just football. Yes we have outperform the other MAC teams academically but will it continue? If a A or B student cannot get a tutor is that fair? I don't have the contacts that you might have. Please look into this if you know the AD. Is this a way of vetting our lower educated athletes?

What hiway is mentioning holds some truth. At the February 1st letter signing get together Jinks, in part of his speech, was asking for donations to help support tutors and other parts of the programs that was lacking funds. He himself said he would be donating to the cause. He laid out multiple areas that are under funded and in dire needs. Said he couldn't believe a D1 school could be this low in finding.

Thank you tech2000. The players that I was speaking with we're upper class students and I would be proud to be associated with. It is a shame that student athletes with high GPA cannot receive the same level of help when needed. I say shame on BGSU!

The Learning Commons at BGSU provides unlimited free tutoring to every full time BGSU student. It is an amazing facility open long hours across a six day week. This is for all students and it is busy with help for math, writing and all other subjects. I am in this area multiple times a week and I see everyone from athletes to regular students in there all the time. I interact with the tutoring staff regularly.

Many times I see the same students- who are really working hard to get their best mark.

Student Athlete Services for academics adds another layer of help for our student-athletes. I know some folks who work there too. Some very good folks.

Now could we use more tutors there? Certainly. Could we use more funds for summer school and other academic associated matters? Certainly. We ALWAYS could use funds to get better off the field.

But I just had conversations Friday with two upperclass football starters- perhaps like the fellows at Chipotle. Both of those guys will leave BG with TWO degrees, three rings and great memories. Now they are good students. But these two guys utilized a lot of help including The Learning Commons for ALL our students.

Not sure how conversations come up in Chipotle like that and I am glad the guys were friendly and respectful. We have truly fine guys on this team. Our coaches want them to do well in all areas. We need to continue to search for resources. But if any student- athlete for not- needs help in understanding where some academic help is located, send him or her to me.

I will get them there.

Go Falcons!

They are not advertised like they were when we were students. I guess because most everyone has access to Google. But we would always ask BGSU-specific questions when calling in and trying to stump the operators.

Falconfan 1,
I agree with you about the Learning Common Center being available to ALL STUDENTS. I'm sorry but we are talking about our student athletes. Like Coach Jink said, its hard to believe the service for these kids is not there. Don't try to sugar coat what we DON'T have. Go to Toledo, They have a whole wing (bldg) for football learning. Hell they even have their own cafeteria for the football players. Miami, Ohio WM same. Don't make excuses for things we don't have and should! Our head coach has even pointed this out. Very sad and its only BG way of vetting kids from the program to save money.
I see rock bottom for this program if its' true. Say its not SO!

You can't just yell out "more money!" BG has always been towards the bottom when it comes to athletics spending, and has one of the lower subsidies in terms of university support in the MAC.

Only way to really help change it is to keep donating money to the Falcon Club.

Miami and Toledo crank out CEOs and upper-level management. We've been widely regarded as a good education school. Not too hard to follow the money there.

I'm sorry but the last time I checked BGSU is an Institute of higher learning. You go to BGSU to obtain a degree. Academics come first and then athletics. I'm sorry but HiWay, hit the road jack and don't come back no more no more. Football team should have its own cafeteria. Football players should have 'better tutors' than the other 18,000 students on campus. GET A LIFE!!!!!! Since when should football players be treated differently. That's what you recommend. SHAME ON YOU!!!!

A few years one of the football players was on Twitter bitching because he and a couple other players could'nt use the Field house for extra practice because a Frisbee tournament was on. Never occurred to them that without the general fees paid by those Frisbee playing students...they wouldn't have a football to throw or a building to throw it in
