I was talking about that with a friend today. The ice arena has slowly been phasing in the unofficial nickname "Madhouse on Mercer," which is great from a branding point of view for BGSU hockey, but are Tuesday afternoon figure skaters going to talk about going to "The Madhouse" like people talk about going to "The Doyt" or "The Stroh?" Whoever the donor was, it's going to be referred to as "The Ice Arena", and nicknamed "Madhouse on Mercer" on hockey nights.footballguy51 wrote:The donor chooses the name. However, I like the idea of "The Slate". It will probably still get called that. Football is held in "The Doyt".TalonsUpPuckDown wrote:I could do without "Family" in the name, but hey..."Meet me at The Slate, I have an extra seat in Section G," has a nice ring to it.edjwolfe wrote:I believe it is a donation from Scott Slater, to be named Slater Family Ice Arena, they signed a deal the day after thanksgiving.
At least they avoided calling it the dreaded Guaranteed Rate Ice Arena.

Since the University has went ahead and changed the sign out front I guess it's ok to confirm some things.
Scott Slater made a donation in the low seven-figures and the arena has been re-named the Slater Family Ice Arena. The gift will be officially announced at tomorrow's Board of Trustees meeting. At this time we're not sure if the gift was a general donation or an anchor gift for renovations.

Good for the Ice Arena. 2 million is a decent chunk of cash.

Not sure if I'm totally sold on 'The Slate' but it's miles better than 'The Slater Family Ice Arena'. Hopefully, in short time, it will just be called Slater Ice Arena.
Anyway, thanks Scott...what an awesome thing to do for the program!!

"Bowling Green State University in Ohio is a repeat conference winner in men’s ice hockey, and an NCAA national champion. Their current arena is aged and lacks amenities, needs a new ice refrigeration system, and its second ice sheet is far too small to use for college hockey practice. There are opportunities to not only add more toilets and concessions, but private suites, increased seating, improved lobby and public areas, and even a student athlete training center. JLG will be working with stakeholders over the next few months to identify their specific goals, then will help develop a series of ranked choices and costs so that BGSU can choose a project budget and begin to implement the designs. In addition to physical additions and alterations, JLG will use our expertise to craft branding and image changes for the arena and its users."

Hopefully the new cooling system will help the playing surface. Our ice has long been one of the worst surfaces around.

I would think the second full sheet of ice would have a much bigger impact. The main sheet is constantly in use.Eliano's Army wrote:Hopefully the new cooling system will help the playing surface. Our ice has long been one of the worst surfaces around.
