Student Section Suggestions

Post by mbenecke »

Hey all,

I recently joined this site. I am a current BGSU freshman (almost done with my first year!), son of two alumni (Jeff and Jo Ann Benecke, '92), and I am absolutely in love with this place. I am a Bleacher Creature, and I wanted to gain some insight from alums and others about the direction we want the atmosphere of the building to take.

We have been discussing some items for next year in terms of continuing to work towards the betterment of the program. The most important things to us:

1. We need to be louder, more often. We would love for you to join in on cheers if you know/hear them. Our goal is to make this the toughest barn in the country to come to, and we need all the help we can get on that. I personally promise that you won't go minutes at a time without hearing from us. We plan on being VERY active with our cheering.

2. We like the idea of both student section themes and arena-wide "(insert color here) outs." We are hoping to work with the Athletic department on conducting an arena-wide orange out next season, including having the players were their orange alternate uniforms at home. We think that the look of a completely packed, oranged-out arena will intimidate our opponents. If you have any ideas for other types of themed nights (we also thought of potentially conducting a white out, a la Penn State football) we would love to hear from you either on here, through a direct message to our Twitter account (@bg_creatures) or an email at [email protected].

Thank you so much for taking the time to read my post. I look forward to spending some great times on this website with all of you. We want this hockey program to be something special, and we know that you all want that as well. Can't wait for this fall! Let's pack the ice arena!

Keep working benecke. Like your attitude. Kill your finals and come back focused. I will work on this incoming 2017 BG group to join you.

I made a thread similar to this when I started at BG. It might help you out.

I haven't been to a game in many years. I would like to think the whole "Who's he? Nobody!" riff with newspapers survives.

Nope....I refuse to believe (accept?) that I could have marched with 2 people who are now parents of a college student! Nice try there 3rd grader! ;)

One of the hardest parts of building that kind of atmosphere at a school the size of BG, where there are big up and down swings for most sports, is that the bad streaks tend to suck the life out of the fan base and it takes a little bit to regain that in the better times. Keep up the effort and enthusiasm and keep encouraging your friends to show up. Student turn out is maybe the biggest key to what you're trying to do. Show up and be loud :)

Haven't missed a season in 23 years, and don't plan and stopping that streak any time soon. Hopefully we run into each other!

The biggest thing for me is that I would like to see originality. Haven't been to a home game in awhile, but if fans are yelling C-ya and all that crap on penalties still, I would like to see that stopped and maybe replaced with something different.

Also, if the announcer still announces the other team back at full strength after a penalty, are we still yelling our traditional "That's debatable" or are we either just saying or adding "They still suck"? If so, that should stop as well. Just stick with our tradition...it's ours. No need to copy anyone else!

But finally...and this goes to all fans at every hockey game they attend if they sit along the glass...please, for the love of all things holy, stop pounding on the glass! ;) It's so annoying.

I was a student starting in 2002. All of those things you say we should stop doing were things we did then, 15 years ago. We had the campus newspaper for the beginnings and yelled, "Who's he? Nobody!" after each visiting player is introduced. We shouted, "See ya, bye bye, _____" on visitor penalties, and "That's debatable, they still suck!" when they were back at full strength. The thing that seems relatively new, because we didn't do it back then, was with 1 minute to go in the period, the announcer says, "One minute remaining in the ____ period" and the crowd chants, "And Toledo still sucks!" I like it, but that's new.

As for glass pounding, I agree that it's stupid and annoying.

Right...and they weren't original then either. They were basically copied from Michigan among others.

Having traveled to roughly 20 or so rinks I can tell you pretty much all chants and cheers are borrowed and stolen.

I have to say, I have always disliked the addition of "They still suck!" at the end of "That's debatable!" It's really redundant since the two terms mean the same thing. The first is intelligent, the second is crass.

Being a really old section "A" member, we tried to be somewhat cerebral with the standard cheers. For example, at the end of a 4 on 4 when it was announced that both teams were at equal strength we would yell "That's open for conjecture!". We would also huddle at times and make up cheers on the fly that pertained to certain situations during the game. We kept it intelligent, clean (for the most part), and prided ourselves on being really, really annoying to the opposing team.

Just being blunt here, but I don't see "That's open for conjecture!" catching on.

I appreciate the suggestions. I'll do my best to try to steer us in the desired direction, but I am only one person (and a first year, at that). Go Falcons!
