Great Lakes Invitational

Post by mbenecke »

So as many of you know, the BGSU Hockey team is going to be participating in the Great Lakes Invitational this winter. It is to be held at the Red Wings new, beautiful Little Caesars Arena. I think all of the possible match-ups are intriguing:

Michigan- old CCHA rival, new head coach is Mel Pearson from Michigan Tech, haven't played them since January 2013.

Michigan State- We get them twice in October, so this has potential rubber match written all over it; also haven't played them since February 2013.

Michigan Tech- our new "rival" in the WCHA, possible rematch in this year's championship game. I think we're going to be see a lot of the Huskies over the next few years.

Is anyone planning on making the trip to Detroit? How do y'all expect us to do up there? Let's discuss! :D

Go Falcons! Roll Along.

From what I understand, the first round will be MTU - MSU, and BGSU - UM. This stands to reason since this tournament is owned by MTU and they would want the perceived weakest opponent in the first round.

Barring any catastrophic events in our life, Falcon Fanatic and I will definitely be there.

MTU rotates between playing MSU and UM in the first round. Since the Huskies played UM last year BG should be matched up with the Wolverines in the first round.

I'm intrigued by this likely matchup with Michigan. I hope we get them and we put up some serious goals on them.

I will be there. Hoping for a different outcome than the last time we played UM in Detroit.

Most likely planning on attending. I've never witnessed a BG victory in Detroit.

Interestingly, the last time we played in the GLI was 1984.

Went to that and we got destroyed. MSU beat us 3 or 4 to 1 , but we were shutout and dominated for most of the game. I think UM scored 11 or 12 goals on us in the 3rd place game......the worst loss I ever saw by BG in person.

The 84-85 team had as many as 12 freshman in the lineup some nights after the huge senior class of 83-84 and the early departures of Galley, Ellett, Kane, Cavallini etc....

They were hard to watch some nights after the dominance of the 82-83 and 83-84 teams. It was a hard does of reality, but I think we did finish .500 by seasons end. Some future stars were in that class though...Ysebaert, Barber, McKee, Paluch

I know it was supposed to be announced like 2 months ago, but I have been looking and haven't found anything. Any idea when/who we will play, or when it will be announced?

We're playing Michigan (as was already stated earlier in this thread). We'd then play either Michigan State or Michigan Tech.

The tentative dates are January 1st and 2nd but that's far from official.

Well that will pretty much end any ideas I had of going......what crummy dates. Had they been the normal Dec 27-28-29 dates was going to be in town....oh well.

The only thing I've found so far is a Facebook page, stating the dates to be 1/1 and 1/2.
