I disagree with David Briggs top to bottom on this.
I support weeknight #MACtion.

I disagree with Briggs on 80-90% of his columns. He needs to go back to covering OSU so I don't even read it!

I agree with pretty much everything Eddie Munster wrote
It's not the fall that hurts...it's when you hit the ground.
Re: MAC Football Scheduling - The Blade....
He pretty well nailed exactly how I feel about the MAC schedule. Only thing he omitted was how much production costs these Mac schools eat for their cut of the "expected to be around $10 million".
Of course that whole contract is kept behind an iron curtain so you know you'll never find out the other costs we incur.
When it's all said and done we whore ourselves out for probably less than $750k in met revenue and the "exposure you cannot buy!" Of maybe 100k viewers. Sadly the real costs of this business model won't be felt until years from now when you don't have an alumni base that even cares if the program exists.

Re: MAC Football Scheduling - The Blade....
I think I'm too old to know anymore, because the world has changed so much since I left BG. I'd love to have a consistent Saturday start time for games, but the reality is that the 20th century isn't coming back. It won't be like the old days when there were only a couple of games on ABC on a Saturday afternoon, and fans went out to the Doyt to see football. Conversely, I'm not sure I'm going to drive to Buffalo on a weeknight to see a game in November, either.
The MAC should build two neutral site domes somewhere and have all the weeknight games there in November. Seat about 3000 people and just make the football a TV show. Two games a night Monday through Wednesday. . .
Or maybe I just want the kids off my lawn.

Play them at Universal Studios or Disney...just roll people in and out all day like the "Raiders of the Lost Ark" stunt show
(spoiler alert...the Germans lose).

Best idea up to this point. Slight changes: 1) nfl has Monday so go Tuesday through Thursday 2) since it's a gamblers weeknight special build the small dome at a casino with sports betting (Ohio might as well go ahead with legalizing it since Vegas gets an NFL team with gambling in place)Lord_Byron wrote:The MAC should build two neutral site domes somewhere and have all the weeknight games there in November. Re: MAC Football Scheduling - The Blade....
I believe sports betting is illegal at the federal level. Nevada is grandfathered in.
That's why states are legalizing casino gaming left and right but sports betting still requires a flight to Nevada.

Funny thing, a few years ago the old Silverdome was up for sale for next to nothing. I was thinking the MAC should buy it and restore it for a few purposes ...
- conference offices
- football championship game
- large venue to allow members to host a major opponent
- play a game or more a week there in cold November, perhaps a double header as suggested above
- basketball tournament
- track and field tournaments
And then I saw the derelict state of the facility. There went that plan ...

Re: MAC Football Scheduling - The Blade....
The return on investment is terrible for football. BG had a nice stretch from 13-15 and what did it get us? Answer: it probably lost us money with the upset of NIU in 13. Chasing this imaginary tv money is slowly killing the fan base and everyone knows it. Problem is the decision makers use the MAC as a springboard now to better jobs. No one makes decisions on what is best long term, only what they can do to beef up their resume now.

This seems, at best, a hypothesis. Teams all over college football have been seeing attendance declines, not just the ones playing their November games on Tuesday and Wednesday nights.Clubber wrote:Chasing this imaginary tv money is slowly killing the fan base and everyone knows it.

Re: MAC Football Scheduling - The Blade....
We all can continue to whine and complain about the November weekday schedule, but it does no good. The MAC has a TV contract and we have to live with it.
