Actually, I would argue that both Grant and Warthog are correct. This type of recreation clause in a contract can be used against a player. It obviously works against players who have been injured under these types circumstances you've pointed out. But they can also be largely be non-existent in a players contract. It all largely depends on how "good" of an agent (Boras) you have or how much your team kisses your butt in Jordan's case. There are ways of keeping these kinds of clauses out of a contract if you're a decent negotiator.hammb wrote:However, Grant, Warthog is correct. Almost all pro sports contracts have clauses that outlaw participation in other sports, even recreationally. Jeff Kent had a clause in his contract that he couldn't ride his motorcycle. Hence he comes up with some trumped up story when he wrecks it. Aaron Boone was not allowed to play basketball, and lost his contract when he got hurt doing it....

After the basketball season ends, you see players from the team playing pick-up games at the rec all the time. Intramural basketball is much safer than rec ball! I don't mind seeing any of the athletes playing really because they are allowed to have fun, too. By being an athlete, the are risking injury and their careers all the time. Let them enjoy it while they can! And besides, it's cool for other students to get to play with these guys they cheer for at games.

Back in '91 & '92 the coaches encouraged us to play basketball. In fact I remember several occasions in Anderson Arena where we actually played some of the coaches. Basketball is great conditioning during the off season and helps linemen be more athletic.
It was fun, I remember several players being really tuff.

Exactly. They're athletes and college kids. They're going to play ball anyway, I'd rather have them do it in a mostly supervised setting (especially at the fieldhouse) than turn an ankle on a crack or a pinecone on the outdoor courts.McMetz811 wrote:After the basketball season ends, you see players from the team playing pick-up games at the rec all the time. "I don't believe I can name a coach, anywhere, anytime, anyhow, who did it better than Doyt Perry."
