Coach Jinks' Challenge to Jake Suder for Scholarship

Post by bg1984 »

"The Bowling Green kicker was having such a strong day at practice recently, according to Yahoo! Sports, that coach Mike Jinks put him on the spot -- on the spur of the moment -- and challenged him to make a 53-yard field goal with a full scholarship on the line."

Awesome reaction by the entire team! This kind of thing helps build a culture of "team." The more I watch and listen to coach Jinks, the more confident I am in his ability to grow this program.

Only surprise to me is that he wasn't already on scholarship, considering a pretty solid season last yr. That said it was great to seem the team reaction afterward.

A very unique way to draw positive attention to your football program. A very nice marketing niche. With it being on Sportscenter it could actually help future recruiting.

And fwiw, Suder was on a semester to semester scholarship. Now he is on full scholarship for his remaining 2 years at BG and won't need to sneak into an unlocked window at the Sebo to sleep on a cot every night.

Can just hear the packed crowd at the Doyt as we play Toledo as prepare for our National Championship playoff game. 'Suder, Suder, Suder, Suder.'

Help recruiting? I don't think it will do much for recruiting kickers when you learn a red-shirt junior has to kick a 53-yard FG under pressure to win a scholarship. How is it that our starting kicker from last year isn't on scholarship already? Not a great message IMO.

Cool thing, although I'm sure Suder would have received the scholarship regardless. Great marketing idea. Not sure it helps recruiting but it definitely gets the BG name and logo out there.

Nice Theatrics....I'm assuming that Suder was getting the schollie any way, but this just adds a little ooomph to the story.

I wonder if it took more than one take

It's positive press and coverage for BG and I simply love the way the team reacted. We will be a much stronger team this year...

It looks like the team is having a lot of fun out there. That probably helps with recruiting, and it sends a good signal about the kind of program Jinks is running. I was really pleased to see how viral this went.
