I like Mike Jinks
I'm serious. I like the guy. He's a leader.
Take this piece in today's Blade.
http://www.bcsn.tv/news_article/show/83 ... _id=878183" target="_blank
“We have to stand back to back and shoulder to shoulder and fight through this thing together,” Jinks said. “It’s college football and people are passionate about it, and that’s what we want.
“We know the work we put in, and we know that no one wants to win more than these players and coaches. We’ll stay together, and we’ll continue to fight.
“It’s not time to panic — it’s time to bond together, to stay confident, and continue to play the game the right way.”
That's a leader right there. Falcon fans are yapping like I have never heard before -- far more fiercely, it seems, than after Gary Blackney laid an egg up at Buffalo back in 2000. And here's Jinks trying to keep his players focused and their morale up. Good for him.
I'm not happy with the way the team is playing. This is probably the worst Falcon football team since I first began following the team 30 years ago. Heck, it may be the worst team since Bowling Green moved up to Division I back in the early 1960s.
And, look, some of this might very well be on Jinks or his staff. Maybe with a better offensive line coach our QBs would be getting better protection. Maybe with a better DB coach we wouldn't be getting burned so often on deep passing plays.
Maybe.
But maybe not.
It may be, instead, that after several bad recruiting efforts dating back to the 2013 Little Caesar's Bowl that our team is a mess and that jinks just doesn't yet have the personnel to do what he wants to do.
If we still stink this badly at this point next season, I may join some of you in screaming bloody murder. In the meantime, I will continue to withhold judgment. I think Jinks deserves more time to accomplish what he wants to do.
It sucks losing to Akron. The Zips aren't very good. But some of that was just plain bad luck. if Doege doesn't go down with a fluke injury, the outcome might have been different.
I sincerely like Jinks. I think he's a leader. And I think he deserves more time to prove he can turn this around.

Re: I like Mike Jinks
You express a voice of reason, which all of us should take heed. That being said, I don't think too many of us think this was a good hire in that BG hired someone who hadn't even APPLIED for the job.
A coaching staff with Minimal experience was also hired ( by Jinks), and , perhaps more importantly, little or no knowledge of BG's typical recruiting footprint. A bunch of young, inexperienced guys from Texas moving into Ohio has not shown to be a successful model so far. Was this at least in part due to minimal funds to pay a new staff?
Much has been said about a solid recruiting job has and is being done. But only time will tell IF this proves to be true. I remember a talk w/ Dave Clawson who said you won't tell till THIRD yr. at earliest how good the recruiting is. So there's that.

Re: I like Mike Jinks
I'm sure he's a great guy, an awesome father and husband and on hell of a next door neighbor. He wasn't hired to be any of those things...he was hired to be a football coach at our nominally FBS school. I've seen just about zero evidence year over year to suggest that he and his staff can do anything competently except...possibly..recruit
It's not entirely his fault that he's here, but he is and we're stuck with him.

I like Jinks, too. He's got character.
I think he was put into an unfair position that he wasn't quite ready for. But I still am holding out hope that he continues to recruit his tail off and gets this thing turned around. It may be a tough couple of years, but I still have hope and trust the process.

Re: I like Mike Jinks
Some guys can coach and some guys can't. This shouldn't be a tear it down and build it back up situation. At this point BG is getting further from relevance everyday.
Re: I like Mike Jinks
Again, as I posted in a previous thread, people are accepting of Jinx because he's "a nice guy". Same sh*t happened with Louis Orr. Couldn't coach, but got a pass for 5 years because he was "a nice guy". This thread is about Jinx being "a nice guy". Getting where this is going????? He's not a head football coach.
Re: I like Mike Jinks
The results are not there, and those quotes could have been pulled straight out of a book of coaching cliches. Really it is a question of if you think Jinks has the ability to turn it around and do you have the patience to see it through. I think most people on this site have made their opinions known on both.
I like him as a leader and a man. I think he's good at both. I don't see evidence of him being a good college head coach. I want nothing more than for the team to prove me wrong.

Re: I like Mike Jinks
None of our opinions or beliefs matter... If he can coach or not, he has a contract. This is how screwed we are... If we find a good coach he's here two or three years and then he's gone. Then we have to hope to find another good coach. If we hire someone who can't coach, we're stuck with him for the length of his deal. Can't keep the competent, can't get rid of the incompetent.... Yay

Yep. When the most optimistic fan on this board has lost faith. It's bad.MarkL wrote:The results are not there, and those quotes could have been pulled straight out of a book of coaching cliches. Re: I like Mike Jinks
Much the same was said about Clawson his first couple of years here. Then he started winning...
Re: I like Mike Jinks
The difference is that Clawson was brought in to rebuild. He took over a bad team, and everyone knew he was there to rebuild the program. Jinx was given a team that went to multiple MAC Championship games and was brought in to maintain the high power offense, not let the team get blown out in multiple games, lose to a D2 school at home and lose to Crackron at home while falling into the basement of the MAC. And all his defenders can keep preaching that Babers left the “cupboard bare”, and I will continue to laugh at you. Clawson showed progress each year; first year he took a bad team to a 7-6 record, second year between the turn around of Brandon’s recruits and Clawson’s recruits period, he went 2-10. But after that he posted records progressively of 5-7, 8-5 and 10-3. And most importantly, the eye test told you that Clawson knew what he was doing. Except for a few on this board and some of his family members and friends, the eye test on Jinx looks like a train wreck and shows he has no idea what he is doing. Jinx was 4-8 last year and 0-5 this year so far, and well on his way to 0-12.BGFan wrote:Much the same was said about Clawson his first couple of years here. Then he started winning...
Re: I like Mike Jinks
He has family members posting on the site? Maybe that's a violation of his contract.

And let’s dive a little deeper into that:CrazyFan wrote:The difference is that Clawson was brought in to rebuild. He took over a bad team, and everyone knew he was there to rebuild the program. Clawson’s first 2 years of non-conference games:
Beat Troy 35-10
Lost to No 25 Missouri 27-20
Lost to Marshall 17-10
Lost to No 8 Boise State 49-14
Lost to Idaho in bowl game 43-42
Lost to Troy 30-27
Lost to Tulsa 33-20
Beat Marshall 44-28
Lost to No 21 Michigan 65-21
BG was in most these games until the end and had shots at winning a few of them, and was only blown out by Boise and Michigan
Now Jinx’s first 2 years of non-conference games:
Lost to No 6 Ohio State 77-10
Beat FCS North Dakota 27-26
Lost to Middle Tennessee 41-21
Lost to Memphis 77-3
Lost to Michigan State 35-10
Lost to FCS South Dakota 35-27
Lost to Northwestern 49-7
Lost to Middle Tennessee 24-13
So he got blown out by Ohio State, Memphis, Northwestern, Michigan State, barely beat a FCS at home by 1 point and lost to a FCS school at home pretty handedly. They were also not really ever in either of the Middle Tennessee games and never had a chance to win.
This is your difference between a coach that knew what he was doing (Clawson) and a coach that has no idea what he is doing (Jinx). And also keep in mind, that Jinx inherited a team that had just gone to 3 straight MAC Championship games!!

Re: I like Mike Jinks
Clawson won as a HC at Fordham and Richmond and he had a staff with some experience. Jinks has none of that
