Is football the next sport cut @ BGSU?

Post by OrangeIsTheNewFast »

I'm disappointed to even be a slight fan of BG football. What are your thoughts on cutting BG to save the pure embarrassment of the community and families that are associated with Bowling Green State University?

You sound very stupid. You sound like those folks at Eastern Michigan. When they were losing like two years ago, lost of fan support, program was dead. Now look they are winning and all is good. What i'm say is its a cycle of ups/down.

Pretty baseless post.

I'd say the community is pretty proud of the fact this team's player names appear to be showing up in the Community section of the newspaper rather than the Blotter. Just wish their names would show up more in the box scores!

Our current situation points pup the futility of participating at the FBS level. We get a good coach and he leaves..get a bad coach and we're stuck with him. At best, we're a launching pad for some coach. At worst, we're a key component in some coach's retirement plan. Either way...I'm not sure WE benefit

D2...that's the ticket

Clawson went 7 - 6 his first year, 2 -10 Second year, 4-8 third year, 8-5 fourth year, MAC champions 5th. He is on a similar path at Wake. Give Jinks a chance for God's sake.

I am not going to comment on whether or not Coach Jinks was the right hire, I do want to add that part of the problem the last 2 years is that Dino Babers did nothing in the area of recruiting during his two years here. He won with Clawson's players and then took off.

THIS.

This is so very, very true.

Did I expect us to be better? Yes. Yes I did. I thought we'd be 2-3 right now, on our way to a 5-7 season, maybe 6-6.

Am I disappointed that we're 0-5? Yes. Yes I am. But, Dino was eyeing bigger and better jobs from his first day at BGSU, and the recruiting suffered.

I'm not enough of a masochist to scroll back through posts from 2010 on this site, but I'm guessing a lot of people wanted Clawson fired (or at least had many negative things to say about him) midway through his second season.

Should Jinks get a free pass because he's a nice guy? No.

Does the fact that Dino's recruiting was nonexistent mean that we should be happy with losses to South Dakota and Akron? No. But, Jinks is our coach at least for the next few years, so getting on here and posting (basically) the same angry rant two or three times a day is probably a waste of valuable time. (Be more like me and post an angry rant once a week :) )

On top of that, several of the decent recruits that he did land followed him to Syracuse.

Bowling Green won two MAC titles during the past five seasons. In fact, it was just three seasons ago that the Falcons beat two different Big Ten teams on their home fields. Historically speaking Bowling Green is one of the best programs in the MAC. Only one other MAC school has more league titles than we do. No MAC school has a better record against the Big Ten than we do.

Bowling Green is actually pretty good at this FBS thing, at least compared to our peers in the MAC.

There is no doubt that this is a really bad season for us, perhaps the worst in a half century. But we will rebuild. We always do. Let's not overreact here.

No...we're not "good at this FBS thing". we've been good at being in the MAC..at being one of the tallest midgets. And when we do go and grow that extra qtr inch..it's a very short lived event because the people responsible for getting us there get the hell out of Dodge as soon as someone...practically anyone..with a fatter bank account comes calling. They don't even stick around for the bowl games..games we usually lose.

You honestly don't see the futility in being locked into a situation where a limited amount of success forces a transition that historically has lead to a massive downturn? And when that downturn happens we get locked into it because we can't afford to erase the mistake we made?

Our best case scenario right now is for Jinks to win a few this year, maybe go 6-6 or 7-5 the next year and then get ht by lightning and win a bunch the following year. Then..he can bail on us for a job in TX or someplace and we can cross our fingers and hope to God that the next guy isn't a complete loser...and if he isn't, he'll be gone in a year or two also and we can start that process all over again. Our best case scenario is a continuous cycle of change that makes any real success at this level we allegedly compete in impossible. That's better than the alternative, which is Louis Orr in cleats..but how much better?

The MAC is FBS. This is where we belong: In FBS and in the MAC, where we have been successful more often than not.

it's true that we've had a tough time keeping talented head coaches. We aren't alone here. This is a decades old challenge for teams across college football, and not just in the MAC. (Ask Utah or Florida, for example.)

At Miami, they try to put a good face on it with the "Cradle of Coaches" branding. It is what it is. Despite it all, Miami has a long track record of success. As do we. Miami is rebuilding. We will, too.

The interesting thing is that 2 years ago football was as finishing a really good run. In an ideal world, our athletic department should have seen some big benefits from all that "success." In actuality the department may be in worse shape now than it was when Clawson took over. Obviously there are various factors for this, but having a successful MAC football program doesn't necessarily correlate with many benefits.
