Not looking very good on offense. Energy isn't there all the way around. Like the new talent for sure. Turner and Koch look solid.

Rotation as far as I can tell
Caldwell-Cummings
Frye-Fox
Turner-Plowden
Koch-Uju
Wiggins
Gadson
Lillard-Matiss
If Gadson doesn't play much this year that means we only have a 9 man rotation to start the year. You can definitely play with that but we are thin at C again.

I am patiently awaiting the takes from those who went.
Re: BG v Capital. The road to the Tourney!
All in all I'm excited for the season. I think this team has some potential.
Wiggins looked good and aggressive but I'll reserve any real judgement until I see him again good that aren't all 3+ inches smaller.
Frye looked great finishing around the rim. He had to be near 20 pts. I think he leads the team in scoring this season.
Caldwell did some good things and I loved how smooth Cummings looked shooting off his own dribble.
Not sure what to think of Koch. Definitely has better shooting touch and range than I envisioned. Was bad at times on defense and seemed winded pretty early on.
Turner, uju, and plowden all bring some athleticism. None really stood out to me though. I think Turner had the most points of that trio, but they didn't have the stat board running so I don't really know. Gadson didn't play until late. Looks like maybe a redshirt?
Overall I am excited for the season. I was disappointed in the defense and rebounding against a team so small and less athletic. We easily best them up though and that hasn't always been the case in these games in recent years. We're gonna look bad at times, but I think we'll look really good at times as well. Cummings and Frye could be the best 2 scoring guards we've had here in a very long time

Re: BG v Capital. The road to the Tourney!
After seeing the rotation tonight I have to go back to the idea of getting Hunter Folkerstma to play ball After November 21st. If getting him to play 5-10 minutes a game keeps Gadsdon from burning a potential redshirt I think it's well worth it. He really wasn't terrible last year and he didn't practice at all. Give him some time to get acclimated and he might be able to spell Wiggins and preserve him for later in the year.
It's frustrating that we didn't use that final scholarship.

So who played backup C?
Wiggins played 26 minutes. Gadson 4. Who played the other 10? I am thinking Plowden but I don't want that to be the case.

Re: BG v Capital. The road to the Tourney!
Some news:
Gadson played sparingly because he had a minor knee injury in practice recently, so they wanted to ease him back into it.
Ethan Good is on scholarship this year. It was not publicized, but it is apparently the case.
All in all, I really liked the effort yesterday. Dylan Frye looked really good, and the team defense looked solid at times. Wiggins was a monster in the paint, as well. I think it's going to be a good year for the orange and brown.

Thanks for the head's up mbenecke. That would explain why Gadson didn't play so much. I have to say I was shocked to think they were going to try and redshirt him (but it was the first thing that came to mind when he didn't play until late). Mainly because Huger singled him out as the player who has made the most progress in his game since he arrived on campus. Now certainly it could be that he had the furthest to go, I don't know, just thought it was odd he didn't come in until late. An injury would certainly explain it though. I hope he gets better quickly, we could use the depth.
I didn't pay super close attention but I think we had Plowden/Uju at the front line at times. Not sure which would technically be the C vs the PF, since nobody on the other team was as tall even as them. I really don't have a problem going with a lineup like Cummings/Frye/Turner/Plowden/Uju. I don't think I'd want Fox/Plowden/Uju however as Fox needs help defense near the rim, and I'm not sure if the smaller guys up front could provide that.
Let's face it, basketball is changing, and you really don't need that 6'10+ center as long as the guys you're replacing him with are 6'6+ and athletic. With Uju & Plowden we have a couple guys like that. Lillard is another if he gets his head on straight. Koch & Wiggins give us 2 true "big guys" and hopefully a health Gadson will be another. Koch looks like he might be more of a stretch 4 though, which is fine by me. Very first play last night he came off a screen and hit a 3 (it rattled about 15 minutes, but went in
)
Interesting that they gave Good a scholarship. I guess if you have the scholarship to give, I've got no problem with it, but it shouldn't be a guaranteed recurring one. I don't see him as a contributor in any way. That also gives us 2 scholarships (along with Fox) given to guys that were originally walk-ons.
I'm excited for the year, I think this team can definitely win some games. IF the youth develops, they could really surprise. And Nelly Cummings hit more jumpers off the dribble last night than maybe any guard BG in the last 10+ years.

After being hurt much of last year...Turner gives us a G with some length who can push the ball in transition. That's a welcome sight
It's not the fall that hurts...it's when you hit the ground.
Re: BG v Capital. The road to the Tourney!
Especially with Lillard being one hiccup away from being booted off the team. With Lillard out a month (if not more at the rate he’s going) it opens up more minutes for a guy like Turner. Huger likes him a lot and this month of expanded minutes after a freshman season basically on the shelf could prove very beneficial for Turner and the team come MAC play.Flipper wrote:After being hurt much of last year...Turner gives us a G with some length who can push the ball in transition.
