Re: UT Preview
I'll be surprised if Toledo doesn't top 70 points tonight. Honestly, I expected and predicted they'd get beat bad, but I didn't think it would be quite this embarrassing. I guess we haven't hit bottom yet as a program.

Didn't win a home game so good luck getting season tickets from me next year. Such a disappointing season in so many ways. Jinks obviously won't be fired but he needs to clean house with his defensive staff and her some coaches in here that know what they're doing.

I see skill players but an obvious lack of lineman on both sides of the ball. To say we're on track is a stretch. With this kind of offensive line play nobody is safe in the backfield and that means we are one stupid play from losing a key skill player. This season proves nothing moving forward other than this program is a long way from returning to Detroit. You can blame whoever you want but any changes at this juncture will not result in immediate success.

Good luck if he does. He was mediocre on a bad MAC team. Likely wouldn't start at the FBS level.Flipper wrote:Loy's in...I assume Morgan is moving on?

Yeah...my google works too...
. This would give him a chance to be a DC at what is nominally the FBS level...he'd be a FOOL not to take it

Re: UT Preview
It would be interesting to know what he makes as a DB coach at Syracuse, as opposed to what BG is paying for a DC. Some of the bigger conference schools have really upped the salaries of their coaching staffs, so it is possible he would have to take a pay cut to go to BG -- and that wouldn't happen.Flipper wrote:Yeah...my google works too.... Some DBs coaches probably make close to what our head coach makes.

“We expected a lot of what we got,” Schwieterman said. “They didn’t run anything that we hadn’t seen in practice, that we hadn’t seen at film. It wasn’t like they threw a whole new playbook at us.
“Give them credit, they executed well and they seem to be really well-coached.”
If that's not an indictment from a senior about this current staff, I don't know what is.

Given how hard this team has played for the current staff, I would be cautious about reading too much into that quote.jpfalcon09 wrote:“We expected a lot of what we got,” Schwieterman said. “They didn’t run anything that we hadn’t seen in practice, that we hadn’t seen at film. The OL didn't do much in the run game, but I thought they pass blocked pretty well. Doege doesn't process quick enough, and that's not really surprising, he's a true freshman. Many of his completions he had at least 3-5 seconds in the pocket, and most of his sacks were after several seconds in the pocket as well. And on at least one or two where the OTs got beaten Doege had room in front of him to step up and let the rush go buy him, but did not.FalconTurf wrote:I see skill players but an obvious lack of lineman on both sides of the ball. He's a true freshman QB, and that's what you get with a true freshman playing.
The defense though was worse than any I've ever seen. I don't think even Brandon or Babers ever put such a piss poor defense on the field. And I'm sure lotsa Jinks apologists will tell us how "hard they played" for him, but that's BS as far as I'm concerned. That defense looked like hot garbage. No explosion, no speed, no strength. Hell you didn't even need strength. They were running zone concepts most of the night, you didn't need to overpower them, you just needed to maintain your damned gaps.
And people want us to BLITZ more? hahaha! This team cannot blitz to save their lives. Whenever we tried it they got to their lane too late and if it was a rush play the RB ran right by 'em; pass plays it rarely ever generated any pressure.
I know everybody has been wanting a new DC, but I don't know what a DC can do. If you send a blitz to the B gap and the RB goes to the B gap, you'd THINK it's accounted for. What we saw was the RB running through the B gap past the blitzer. And when we didn't blitz our entire front 7 looked like they just stood still until they got blocked, there was no flow, no penetration, nothing. I don't care how good UT is, you don't get destroyed that badly on talent alone; not to a conference foe. Alvin Kamara didn't run on our defense like this. Curtis Samuel didn't run on our defense like this. Melvin Gordon against Wisconsin in Babers' first year would be the only beat down worse than this that I can remember.
Simply a pathetic effort in a rivalry game.

I agree with a lot of this. I doubt that a different defensive coordinator would change what happened last night. Talent seems the core issue here. When you say "No explosion, no speed, no strength." That's not Xs and Os. That's a lack of talent. RIght?hammb wrote:The defense though was worse than any I've ever seen. If people say coaching was the problem with our defense last night, I'll listen. But I'm not seeing it.

Re: UT Preview
Several times last night players were in position to make a play and didn't. In sports coaches put you in position, and its the players job to execute. Last night the players didn't execute. Not just to blame them, but this is a systemic problem for BG, where since Clawson has left our defense has been poop.
While I am happy we won when we had Babers, I am beginning to think he was the worst thing that could happen to this program. His system was predicated with offense. Score fast and often, make the other team one dimensional and easier to defend. Our defense didn't need to be great, just good enough to get a handful of stops. This system works if you have a quality offense, which he had with MJ, Roger, and Dieter. Heck, Knapke had success when he had those targets to throw to, and a good line to protect him. Fast forward to Jinks first year, and we all thought that Knapke would have a similar season to that one year, and all would be good. I don't know if we over valued him, or Jinks screwed up, but when the offense failed the D was not anywhere good enough to over compensate. So why do I blame Babers? He stripped mined the program, used up the resources and didn't put anything back. I looked at the defense last night, and tried to look for the upper class talent on defense, and I didn't see much.
This is not an indictment that Jinks is a good coach, as I think he fails to make the right adjustments, but I will give him credit for recruiting. I am also excited for the talent of this freshman class, and believe they have the potential to win the MAC before they are done. Whether Jinks is the coach or not, who knows?

Those who can't do, teach. Those who can't teach, teach PE.
