And I'm sure lotsa Jinks apologists will tell us how "hard they played" for him, but that's BS as far as I'm concerned. That defense looked like hot garbage. No explosion, no speed, no strength. Hell you didn't even need strength. They were running zone concepts most of the night, you didn't need to overpower them, you just needed to maintain your damned gaps.
And people want us to BLITZ more? hahaha! This team cannot blitz to save their lives. Whenever we tried it they got to their lane too late and if it was a rush play the RB ran right by 'em; pass plays it rarely ever generated any pressure.
I know everybody has been wanting a new DC, but I don't know what a DC can do. If you send a blitz to the B gap and the RB goes to the B gap, you'd THINK it's accounted for. What we saw was the RB running through the B gap past the blitzer. And when we didn't blitz our entire front 7 looked like they just stood still until they got blocked, there was no flow, no penetration, nothing. I don't care how good UT is, you don't get destroyed that badly on talent alone; not to a conference foe. Alvin Kamara didn't run on our defense like this. Curtis Samuel didn't run on our defense like this. Melvin Gordon against Wisconsin in Babers' first year would be the only beat down worse than this that I can remember.
Simply a pathetic effort in a rivalry game.
I agree with a lot of this. I doubt that a different defensive coordinator would change what happened last night. Talent seems the core issue here. When you say "No explosion, no speed, no strength." That's not Xs and Os. That's a lack of talent. RIght?
If people say coaching was the problem with our defense last night, I'll listen. But I'm not seeing it.
The schemes on defense suck. BG goes to zone on 3rd and long and don't get pressure on the QB to be effective. The result is teams converting those 3rd downs while BG defenders aren't close enough to try to make pass breakups or end up whiffing on tackles. Talent is the issue too, but it's up to the coaches to at least try to put the players in the best position to maximize their skill sets and play to their strengths. That absolutely didn't happen last night and hasn't happened most of the year. UT came out in the 2nd half with awesome adjustments and absolutely destroyed BG on gash plays while nothing changed on the defensive side of the ball. It was embarrassing.
My hope is that since Jinks will still be here next year that Moose/Mazey tell him to bring in some experienced assistants to help him out on that side of the ball. Lord knows he and the players need it because it's a hot mess.
Agreed. Position by position on both sides of the line, we were physically outmatched. If you are thoroughly dominated at the line of scrimmage, especially on both sides of the ball, it doesn't make any difference how good your skill players are. We don't have the size and strength to control the line of scrimmage against anyone. I know our O line was injury depleted, but I don't think it would have made a whole lot of difference if they weren't.
This team has a ton of holes to fill, but finding some guys that are capable of bloodying the other guys' noses in the trenches is where they need to start. We need to find and develop some big, nasty dudes that can move the guy across from him backwards. We don't have any of that right now. Until we do, we are not going to see any consistent winning.
I enjoy seeing Doege, connecting on td passes as much as anyone, but if that's all you have to rely on, you're not going to keep pace with a team that can line up, blow you off the ball and run it down your throat every play. Great example of that last night.

Without a doubt the most annoying thing I've heard at a live sporting event. Not just because they're our rival. If my school's band played that after every first down I'd never attend a home game. I can't believe the poor kids in that band actually enjoy playing that same thing over and over again, even it does mean the team is moving the ball.
I'm hopeful that part of the season end meeting between Moose and Jinks (I'm assuming that they do a review...seems like a good idea) will include a strong suggestion to bring in some qualified defensive coaches, a new OL coach and a new strength coach.
A really, really strong suggestion
It's not the fall that hurts...it's when you hit the ground.
I think Clair stays, knowing he can dominate in the MAC and then maybe get drafted, going the Kareem Hunt route.
Kid has talent and loves the coach he plays for. I think he could potentially also go the Gehrig Dieter route and grad transfer, but who knows? Either way, the kid is super talented and I wish nothing but the best for him, selfishly hoping it comes in the orange and brown.

+1
I was under the impression that the original mention of his transfer was in response to the statement that he wouldn't have come here if Jinks was not here. In other words, he still may come here but he would have transferred after a year.
If I'm wrong, then I completely agree that we should not be discussing somebody transferring away from BG. I really enjoy Clair and hope he succeeds at BGSU. I also hope he ends up in the NFL as the next Kareem Hunt.
The game announcers this week mentioned that he had other D-1 offers but they wanted him to redshirt and he wasn't willing to do that. If he wasn't willing to sit out a year then, hopefully, he won't be willing to sit out a year now to transfer.

Not to worry Falcons, the Toledo Marching Band loves playing it and the Toledo fans love hearing it. As they say "music to our ears", and we don't grow tired of it.

We also can control where he goes. We look bad, but it can discourage where he wants to go.
The issue with transferring as a skill player, is sitting out that year. You lose ground to kids playing, and potentially can lose out to an incoming recruit. He's looked good, but no guarantee he would crack the rotation at a larger school.
