Improved team from last year???
Re: Improved team from last year???
We are a fluke fumble and a clueless coach at Kent away from being 0-12.

I was at the game Wednesday. Offensively you guys should be ok but you obviously need better talent on defense. Toledo always needs improvement on that side of the ball. I don’t know how far you guys are away from a winning season but hopefully it happens sooner than later.
I hadnt been to the Doyt in probably a decade. Looked upgraded from last time and seemed nicer than what I remembered. Good work!

The D overall is the worst I've ever seen at BG in my 30+ years following the Falcons. The O looks pretty good these days but man, that DC needs to go NOW> The D players aren't as bad as some think but the schemes and plays are abysmal.

What is it about the schemes and plays that you believe is substandard?Falconfreak90 wrote:the schemes and plays are abysmal.

Quite a few times during the game they could have had the RB tackled for a loss or short gain, only to miss the tackle and the guy get a chunk play. Good talent can make up for bad coaching, but no amount of coaching will make up for bad talent.Schadenfreude wrote:What is it about the schemes and plays that you believe is substandard?Falconfreak90 wrote:the schemes and plays are abysmal.
Those who can't do, teach. Those who can't teach, teach PE.
Re: Improved team from last year???
Lack of talent or lack of development of talent? Part of coaching is overseeing progression of player development - both in terms of skills and physicality. If our guys were in position but unable to make a tackle, it could be evidence of lack of proper conditioning and skill development.

If there's anything worse than losing to a "rival" -- it's having one come on here and give some pity praise. Trust me, that's what this is and nothing more. BGSU's program has declined so badly that the match up with UT isn't truly a rival game, anymore. For it to actually be a rivalry, both teams have to win games against one another pretty consistently. That's not happening and hasn't happened for BG.Rocket_Fanatic wrote:I was at the game Wednesday. Offensively you guys should be ok but you obviously need better talent on defense. And the problems aren't on defense alone. BG has a head coach who is unqualified to BE a head coach at this level, and it shows in almost every game, in some form or another.

Re: Improved team from last year???
I feel the key issues this year were as follows:
1. QB Play
2. Youth
3. Loss or Lack of Effective Play from Oldest Players
1. QB is the position that turns the tide of the team (look at Packers with Rodgers against Packers with Hundley). QB Play early in the year was among the worst in the nation and nobody can win titles with play like that (ask Michigan about their QB problems...its also the reason they can't get over the hump).
2. In watching games, I specifically believe the area of lowest achievement was in the DL. Teams that run can run when DL doesn't play effectively. Having said that, we were young up front. 22 year old men can handle 19 year old men strength by strength. A year of aging will do us good on the defense.
3. We love our 20 seniors but only 7 were contributors. Rarely can a team overcome this. Is this Babers fault? I dunno. But if a roster of 85 scholarships has 65 actual players minus redshirts, and 13 of the oldest 20 cannot play, it means our 52 are taking on everyone else's 65 plus one year on average difference. In our case, it could be closer to a two year gap difference. Add injuries to our offensive line. And it is more than likely that we were taking 45 on 60 for most of the season. Those are bad odds.

I am not picking on quotes like this one, just using this as an example to make a point...
Not making a tackle has absolutely nothing conditioning. Making a tackle is all about being stronger or faster than the other person you are tackling, laws of force apply to this equation. So if we missed tackles (which I am not saying we did not), maybe...just maybe...its BECAUSE WE WERE YOUNGER THUS NOT AS STRONG AS THE OTHER TEAMS.
As for missing tackles in the open field...yes that can come down to bad angles. But, it is usually more to do with being out-athleted at the point of attack. And this once again comes down to BELOW AVERAGE UPPER CLASS RECRUITMENT. The best example of this was when the Northwestern QB ran through our secondary.
Give these young kids time. If we win 6 games next year, 8 the next...then the blame on these years falls back on the previous staff. Either way, we will know in two years.

Re: Improved team from last year???
What we ABSOLUTELY must see is similar improvement to what we saw after our last 2-10 season. We have to get to 5-7 next year. If we do that, then I'll be happy. Clawson went 2-10 in year two just like Jinks. But Clawson's teams went from 5 wins to 8 wins to MAC Championship. We need to see that out of this program. And honestly, 5 wins playing in the MAC shouldn't be that hard.

**(Cough)** **(Cough)** LOUIS ORR **(Cough)** **(Cough)** This is exactly the mentality we went through with Louis Orr. Blamed Dakich for his loses. Played the "wait until he get's his own recruits in here" game. Played the "wait until his recruits get acclimated into the system" game. And it blew up in our faces. We didn't make the change when we should have, and it absolutely BURIED our basketball program. We are still paying for it 3 years later! While the rest of the MAC is playing against D1 programs, we just finished up a tournament against 3 D2 schools, and we lost one of them! My point is to be careful with the "give the coach some time" ideology, because it can blow up in your faces. And my opinion, which I'm sure everyone on this board knows by now, is that Mike Jinx is the next Louis Orr. He has already buried our program, and will continue to bury it deeper and deeper each year. It will then take us that much longer to climb back into relevance once someone at the university gets their head out of their azz and decides to get rid of Jinx.bowlgreen wrote:"Give these young kids time. The points made about basketball here aren't correct. All 3 of those teams were division 1 schools. We're 5-2, how about we lay off the complaining and instead support the team?CrazyFan wrote:**(Cough)** **(Cough)** LOUIS ORR **(Cough)** **(Cough)** This is exactly the mentality we went through with Louis Orr. MBenecke, troll CrazyFan don't know anything. I only see his messages when people quote him. Yeah 3 D2 schools? He don't know what he is talking about. Can only imagine the other garbage he is saying. I didn't approve of the Jinks hire but whom is this Jinx he is talking about. He isn't even talking about the correct person. So immature. I don't see us doing much better next year but with Claire and Doege I think we should at least get back to 4 - 8. They are not going to fire Jinks. We are stuck with him for 3 more years.

Re: Improved team from last year???
OK..so we fire Jinks. The next guy goes 2-10 and then 3-9 and recruits near the bottom of the MAC. WTF do you do then? Fire him too? Gonna pay to buyout Jniks for three years and then the next guy for three years? How many people do ou think you can pay NOT to be here? We pretty much HAVE to give Jinks at least two more years. Hopefully...we'll be improved by then...we'd almost have to be
