UT ups Candle to $1.2 Million per year...

Insanity to pay a MAC coach that much...the revenue just isn't there to support it. Crazier still...Louisiana Lafayette just signed Billy Napier to coach with a max income of 1.4 million per year.

I've been saying it for a long time. College football has gotten too big. Coaches are instant millionaires, traditional rivalries are ended for bucks, kids are exploited and often not educated. It's too big.
The MAC has traditionally been the escape from it all. 6 teams in one state, short drives to conference games, smaller and more local feel, coaches getting paid 2-300k. The moment PJ Fleck got an enormous raise, I knew it was over. The MAC had caved. And now it has gone to the ridiculous.

Win one MAC title and you become a millionaire.

I hope they are dumb enough to eventually pay him
2-3X that much. Just like has been mentioned, it can not be justified by their income and budget, and I believe they already have some “debt” problems, unless someone is picking up the tab.

Contract runs through 2023. They obviously know he won't be there through the end of it, so how much is the buyout? If you know he's gonna get poached, might as well set up the contract to get an extra payday when he leaves.

Thought I'd read the buyout would be 450K. Doable for most P-5 teams if they want him bad enough.

Candle is lucky he signed his new contract already. It's just one game but after last nights embarrassing loss I wonder what the administration is thinking now.

Toledo played it's toughest opponents at home this year. One team missing its best player. Toledo played The U when Miami had some of its players suspended and was early in the season. Toledo played many bottom dwellers. Toledo won against an FCS school and barely beat a 3-9 Nevada team. Got blown out by Ohio and Appalachian State. The Rockets 11-3 record isn't as good as it appears and showed it last night. Enjoy the big contract you just signed Candle too.

Sorry MarkL, didn't see your reference about Toledo's fluff schedule until now. But I wouldn't call the game against The U a blow out. Toledo was only down 8 with the ball and about 6 min remaining, hardly a blow out, however the U was playing with several players suspended, had some injuries and was going through family issues caused by Hurricane Irma. So Miami wasn't playing full strength. Regardless Toledo played a weak schedule and played it's tough games at home. Enjoy that large contract for next 5 years. Candle won't be going anywhere any time soon.

2 quick unrelated thoughts.

1. Nobody will hire Candle anytime soon I bet. UT football will be synonymous with shutout for a while on the national stage. On top of that they lose more talent than we bring back. He's got a building job on his hands.
If you ask me, the major salary he just booked was about UT earning a payday when a major program hires him next year. If that doesn't happen, UT will only bankrupt themselves. There's an old saying: nobody wants an employee that nobody else wants. If Candle is now that employee, he's a very well paid one that could drain his employer. This contract is looking like a backfire right now and also a case study for other MAC programs.

2. Candle should give Gregg Brandon a call. After we got utterly embarrassed in the same bowl game 10 years ago, Brandon had a team on his hands who had an entire off season of being told they were overrated, didn't belong on the same field as a good team, etc. First game of the following season they beat nationally ranked Pitt and they did it not with a cute offense but with a physical, hard hitting defense. If Candle wants to show he's a million dollar coach, start by calling others for some advice.

And one more thought. Candle owes Solich a whole lot of his paycheck as thanks for his team collapsing late. UT us the luckiest team I've seen in a while because they got Akron ... yes Akron in the conference title. Had Ohio not collapsed late, the conference game would have been a 3-4 possession Ohio win.
At least Candle owes Solich a good steak dinner or something ...

Maybe he will meet Solich for dinner on March 14 holiday. A really good steak and some extras. [-X
