Stat watch

Post by Globetrotter »

It's likely that if the roster stays the same 4 players will reach 1000 points next year and that doesn't include our best player who could hit it. as of 2/16 postgame

Wiggins 894
Lillard 744
Frye 635
Caldwell 497
Turner 507

Wiggins should get into the top 15 all time in rebounding this year
CAREER REBOUNDING
(Rankings since 1953-54 season)
Player (Years) REB
1. Nate Thurmond (61-63) 1295

4. Colin Irish (80-84) 871
5. Jim Connally (69-71) 851
6. Ron Hammye (75-78) 810
7. Al Dixon (66-68) 774
8. Anthony Stacey (95-00) 760
9. Rex Leach (57-60) 708
10. Wiggins 704

For those who don't know, it's because Freshmen weren't allowed to play "varsity " games.
But GAD, was that Freshman team fun to watch!

I am confused by these stat years. Based on my math this is just for 2 years actually. It should read 60-63

Not sure why they list it like that, but Nate played 3 seasons at "varsity" level, + one yr. on Freshman team. That group HAS to be the best group of recruits Ever put together at BG. Too bad most never finished in NW Ohio. Ira Harge went to N. Mex., Wavey Junior basically flunked out. Only Nate and his HS teammate from Akron,( Elijah Chatman) ,were around for full 4 yrs. , along with a few "lesser" lights from that freshman group.
That's not meant to demean them, but I can't recall names now either. Bob Dawson was point guard, but not sure of who else from that class.

I

I believe that former BG Basketball Head Coach Pat Haley was a starter on that team.

I think so ( that you're wrong) . Think he only played 2 yrs at most. Unfortunately, I didn't have yrbooks from those yrs, so can't say for sure. But I don't think he made it to a sr. yr.

Anyone know how to research this kind of thing. I just remember watching the freshman team was a bigger deal than varsity then.

I stand corrected... and you're memory is a heck of a lot better than mine. Waves Junior HAS stats from 62-63 season. Pat Haley was also on that team, but I'm not sure if he was in Nate's class or not. ( guess I'll go back again to see)

I'm having some fun with this.. wavey junior played in only 16 games in 61-62 season. I was pretty sure he'd had grade problems, but eventually did come back following year.
Unfortunately, BG did not keep records on the JV, freshman rosters, so unless names ,pix etc from yrbooks at that time show them, it's hard to see all kids on that freshman team with Nate.

The starters on the 62-63 team were Nate, Butch Komives, Wavey Junior, Elijah Chatman, and Pat Haley. Elijah Chatman got hurt late in the season and Mel Gilbert started several games in his place including the NCAA tournament win over Notre Dame. Komives was also hurt going into the tournament but played. I know this is really ancient history, but I wonder how far that team might have gone if healthy.

Haley, Billy Reynolds (Wayne), and Burley Chapman (BG) were also on the freshman team with Nate, etc. The scholar works/BGSU site has all the football media guides and programs from that era but nothing for basketball between '60 & '63. Their basketball collection is limited to the '68 & '69 media guides.

Year-by-year season stats going back to 1944-45 are available on BGSUFalcons.com. Should help with some of the discussions.

If we project a likelihood of at least 10 more games, 8 MAC season, 1 tourney (at least) 1 postseason tourney (at least)

If they kept their current pace that would put the group at about
Wiggins 921
Lillard 758
Frye 678
Caldwell 547
Turner 505

It would be pretty likely 2 of those 3 would hit the 1000 mark in 2018 and a very outside chance of all 5.

Rebounds
Wiggins 691

That number would put Wiggins 11th all time in rebounds passing Scott Thomas. With 1 full year to go and a decent chance at becoming just third falcon all time to record 1000 rebounds.

3P%
Matt Fox is at .455 which would put him 7th for a season all time.
He is at .40 for a career which would put him at 5th all time for a career.
