New redshirt rules in 2018?

NCAA will be voting in April to allow coaches to play redshirt players in no more than four games without having them burn a year or eligibility. Would have a significant impact for injuries and recruiting purposes.

They already have a similar rule for injured players, provided the injury happened in the first half of the season and they only played in a certain percentage of games. Would those restrictions be loosened?

According to the article (it's on The Athletic which is behind a paywall), it would mitigate the use of medical redshirts. It does have the support of both players and coaches but we all know it'll change once the NCAA fully grasps it.

Get rid of stopping the clock after every first down, just have it for the last 2 minutes of a half. That would be my solution.

I agree. They also stop the clock when a player goes out of bounds until they spot the ball. Get rid of that too. Just have the clock constantly running until the last 2 minutes of each half, except for an incomplete pass.

Limit replays to coaches challenges and scoring plays only.
Clock doesn't stop on first downs.
Get creative with penalties. Offer the choice of a clock run off instead of declining.
Shorten halftime by a few minutes.

I like everything here except getting creative with penalties and shortening halftime. I am not sure many coaches would take the run off, especially early in the game. And I think a lot of schools would fight the halftime option because it would hit their concessions revenue. I also don't like it because you cut into the FMB performance. I see it as taking away an academic opportunity since the members are getting credit for the class.

I've heard that these two clock rules could be up for vote:
- treat incomplete passes like out of bounds runs. That is, the clock stops on incomplete and starts when the ref spots the ball. And like the out of bounds rules, clock starts on the snap within 2 minutes.
- upon scoring a TD and at that moment, a set clock starts for the PAT. In order to reduce celebrations and hurry up the process.

As we run a pass-heavy offense, I'm mixed on the first. But the second, I actually like a lot.

But here's my suggestion for making the game go faster. Make ads cost way more. Get better but fewer ads. Nothing kills the flow of the game like a long commercial break, especially in cold NW Ohio.

NCAA approved the four game rule. Any athlete with redshirt eligibility can play a maximum of four games in a season without losing their 5th year.
