Seating changes
The university made it official that the student section, band and "home" seating will now be on the east side of the stadium.

Re: Seating changes
I like it. It'll look good on TV, and it seems like it could be a little spark for the fanbase.
I just wish the band was still sitting in front of the Sebo, where their designated spot is.

Re: Seating changes
I love all of these changes EXCEPT moving the band. I guess they only want them playing to half the stadium instead of the whole stadium. It will also be hard to get student section/band coordination if the band has to turn around to play to the students. I would not be surprised to see that changed back for 2019.

Re: Seating changes
The thought behind moving the band is to help fill up the stadium, and also that the band will be playing towards the cameras and therefore sound better. I get the thought, but I think the people in attendance would rather have the band in the end zone where we can all hear them.

Re: Seating changes
Not to mention the donation made that was designated for that endzone seating specifically for the band. I like the band where they are. Moving them isn't a huge deal to me but bailing on that donation for it's intended purpose is a bit of a letdown.
Re: Seating changes
One thing I noticed is they have the visiting will call entrance still on the home side. They may want to move the visiting will call to the west side by the visiting section.

Re: Seating changes
Who is telling the students they have been moved? I'll bet they all end up in the general admission on the west side.
In theory it is a good plan but don't move the band. They make the north endzone look great although I would be happy to take 4 seats in that section.

Re: Seating changes
They tried this during the 2006 season for a few games and it didn't really work, not sure how much of a difference it'll have this time around either. The athletic department basically confirmed to me that this is being done for TV purposes and there are no firm plans on what to do about the band seating in front of the Sebo. I guess I'm skeptical on whether or not this is a viable long-term solution.

Re: Seating changes
It's asinine. First, moving the band from the seating area in front of the Sebo, that was designed and built specifically for the band is just stupid. Beyond that, forcing people to sit anywhere in our empty stadiums is just stupid. We should be thrilled to death that anybody actually shows up, not forcing them to sit on the opposite side of the stadium to improve the image on TV.
I'm sure it'll go over real well when staring back into the sun. It'll go over even better on a November night with a wind out of the West. Not like that's the prevailing direction of the wind or anything.
One of two things will happen: Either they don't enforce this and the bulk of kids remain on the East side, or they DO enforce it and we end up with 2 sides of the stadium equally empty as people just leave.
Typical BG Athletics, completely clueless on anything having to do with gameday experience. Bonus points if this is something the MAC office pushed for, to continue their mission to screw over fans that actually want to attend games in favor of keeping ESPN happy.

Re: Seating changes
I like the change except for the band movement. Putting the BG team on the east side will allow the team to have easier and quicker access to training facilities. It then, obviously, makes sense to declare that side the home side for seating purposes. The students should be on the side with the home team.
For TV, it makes the stadium appear more full. Also, our team will always be on a camera (right now, we show the visiting team on camera for the entire game); we might as well take the opportunity to advertise our team when we can. I highly doubt students will protest and demand to sit on the west side of the stadium, especially when they realize that the BG team will be on the east side. I'm sure a few students will complain that they have to walk further, but the incoming freshmen will not know the difference and, after a year or two, it will no longer be an issue.

Re: Seating changes
While we are at it any don't we just build a new stadium where the golf course is or by the hill. Make it a dome like they have for Idaho!! A cozy little intimate environment. Dome means no more bad weather.
Seriously leave the band where it is. If I was the donor who put up money to have the band sit there and now don't use that donation I would ask for my donation back. I remember back in late 80s and 90s when the band sat on the NW corner. The student section couldn't even hear the band because they were playing to the East stands.

Re: Seating changes
It's already been mentioned, but putting home team on East side used to be done. Last time I sat on east side was the "great flood game" , when we lost to Miami on a missed FG attempt as "BIG BIRD" ( Remenber him?) slipped and fell while attempting the winning kick. Led to the establishment of our first artificial turf field. Prior to this , BG had perhaps the nicest natural grass field anywhere, but drainage system failed that day.
East side is the least protected side of stadium weather wise. I'm keeping my season tickets on 50 yd line West side.
Oh, and I DON'T agree with band placement either.

I agree with this. Overall, it's a good move. If they can come up with a good use for that end zone seating, even better.mbenecke wrote:I like it. It'll look good on TV, and it seems like it could be a little spark for the fanbase.

Re: Seating changes
I don't know what other use that space would have. It was paid for by donation to be for the band. The space between bleachers are wider to accommodate the instruments. The aisles are wider. It is shaped for the best sound. All things that someone took the time to look at and design for but now have been tossed aside without a care.
