Tonight's loss an opportunity

Well, my internet ban proved to be a bit of a dissapointment. Still, it was great to see us on TV. We got a lot of positive coverage not only for Siggy, but for the program, as well.

But, that is not what the title of this post is in reference to. As painful as this game was to watch with all of the penalties (most of which were unquestionably BS), this is a great opportunity for Pooch to drill into these guys that the stupid penalties e commit (Matsumoto's holding comes to mind) lead to the weak calls that we consistently get. As much as Wilkins and Shegos suck, the weak calls they make against BG are no doubt motivated by the more blatant penalties we ACTUALLY commit.

Knowing Pooch and his commitment to detail, I'd say that going into the playoffs he is going to harp on this for the next two weeks. For this reason, I'm very glad we had a game like this at this time. If we had any other coach behind the bench I wouldn't feel this way, but Paluch has proven all year that he can use individual games to turn around poor areas of play. He can, and I believe will, do it this time. Actually, I've never felt this good about a loss before. Weird!

Wilkins can still kiss my AZZ!!!!!

BTW, early prediction: we're getting at LEAST two points from the weasles next weekend...

you know, bleeding, I have to agree. some of it we bring on ourselves, and some of it is total bullshit. I was at the game tonight, and it was a good, hard faught game. I am sure coach will use this to drill home what we need to improve on. I actually don't feel bad about this lose. Maybe it has more to do with the fact I wasn't going to let 3,000 people get me down about my team, but I don't think this was a bad loss. BTW, me and my buddies are offically the most hated people in East Lansing tonight

That hold is actually considered a "good penalty." He prevented the skater from being one-on-one with the goalie and eliminated the chance for a possible garbage goal on Siggy's left side. However, having a halfway decent penalty kill would have helped. This team needs to shape up the Special Teams are we won't make it past the first round of the Super Six.

I assume you're speaking of the holding call Matsu took...and I must, respectfully disagree. Matsu had a good angle on the man who was carrying the puck, and the trailer was covered as well. His decision to haul the guy down was not a good one. Dobek's penalty for 'tripping' the goalie was foolish (even if unintentional) as he had no reason to be in the crease.
Hodgeson's 'roughing after the whistle' was a bad penalty to take, and as much as I love to watch Sitko hit, he's got to learn to keep his elbows out of the action.

You think Dobek actually tripped that guy? The goalie took such a dive I'm surprised he didn't get an Oscar.

Whether there's such thing as good penalty or not, if you don't have the PK to kill it off, it means crap.

Good is a relative term. But you're right, if the penalty kill doesn't get the job done, it becomes a very bad penalty.

Dobek skated across the top of the crease where he shouldn't have been, Vicari did a great acting job, you know the rest. But of course MSU can pummel Jordon Friday night and get a goal off that play, or have two guys parked in the crease Saturday night and get a goal, but hey... house rules right?

When they showed the replay of Hodgson's and Dobek's penalties on TV, I noticed something about each call. On Hodgson's, the replay they showed on TV had a BG player being knocked down also. At the exact same time. On Dobek's penalty, the replay showed Vicari look down at where Dobek was skating, then he stuck his leg out to trip him. It wasn't a natural movement by a goalie. It wasn't acting either. He went down because he was in an ackward position so he could trip Dobek.

When looking at the reffing situation this past weekend you just have to remember that there is a Spartan sitting in the commissioner's office.

nevermind... my hockey history is slipping... I forgot that Ron Mason was the MSU athletic director. For some reason I thought he moved up to CCHA commissioner. But I *did* know that he moved up! HA!

I thought you were referring to Jim Rhuel back in the day when the CCHA office was in the press box of the Ice Arena.
