Who would you hire?

Post by mbenecke »

I have seen a lot of posts the last few weeks questioning Huger and his future here in BG. While I understand the frustration, I am legitimately curious who you would hire to replace him and/or who you think we could actually get? I don't feel like BG is necessarily a destination job for basketball, but I guess I could be proven wrong.

And another thing, I am currently watching Pitt-Notre Dame on ESPN2, and Dan Dakich is on the call. So I guess my other question: would any of you rather have him back here than Huger? I was like 9 when he left, so I don't remember his time here much.

I don't follow national basketball as much to know any legit names. I would do the exact same thing they did the LAST time they went out and made a truly great hire. Hit the top mid-major programs in the country; Witchita, Butler, VCU, etc and find somebody on those staffs. Jans was a HR as the top assistant at Witchita. I don't see why we couldn't land a similar prospect now; thanks to Frack we can afford to pay a competitive salary. We also have a nice new arena to recruit to.

As for Dakich, that ship has long since sailed. Dakich 2.0 was undermined completely by the leaving for WVU thing. He should have never been brought back, regardless of how good a job he did here in his first tenure. Listening to him on Klassen's podcast I do think he'd be a better coach today than he was back then (he realizes how stupid his facial hair/tattoo/etc policies were). But he's never coaching again...he's got a cushy ESPN/radio gig, why would he enter the ringer again.

Chris Holtman's assistant at Ohio State would be a great hire. He has been with Chris every step of the way. I don't know his name but just watching during the timeouts and practices that they show on Big Ten Network he's very involved. However, as I mentioned in another thread, I will take the job for 200k. I can't do any worse. I know when to call timeouts properly. I know when to sub in and out players. I played High School basketball. I can run a man-to-man and zone defense. I have a very high sports IQ. I could then hire Hammb and Flipper as my assistants and then hire Globetrotter as the recruiting coordinator.

I'd give two guys on Beilein's staff at UM..., Deandre Haynes (played and coached in the MAC) and Saddi Washington (a decade at Oakland with Greg Kampe) a look...but then I'm a John Beilein fanboy.

And I am a younger version of Beilein, except I would make our players shoot free throws in their spare time. ( something that could be Michigan's downfall)

I think our current coach deserves more time. But I usually found Dakich entertaining, even when the basketball wasn't. He had personality, and that counts for something with me.

I don't want to know the name of our next coach until he's announced. If I know him already, he's probably not the right hire. I don't like retreads getting a second chance here. (See Louis Orr) I am also not crazy about giving former big name players there first head coaching gig. That usually doesn't work either. (Bobby Hurley was an exception to that rule)

I say go get the an up and coming assistant coach from a winning program where the current head coach is well respected. Chances are we don't know that guys name yet.

UTA fired Scott Cross...225-161 with a 2008 NCAA bid in 12 seasons. He'd be worth talking to. A guy I had hoped we would hire a couple of years ago, Bacari Alexander, was fired by Detroit after two awful seasons and an early season suspension for telling one of his players to S his D...the kid's father was there and heard it.

So...maybe I'm not the best judge

I'd hire Robyn Fralick to lead our men to their first NCAA appearance in over 50 years.

Robyn's husband is on her coaching staff at Ashland. He was a successful high school and college coach before joining her staff. Even though her husband quit coaching to be closer to his wife and children maybe we can talk him out of retiring hire BOTH Fralick's and get a group discount. After all I did save 15% on my car insurance.
