Recruit Update

Post by TalonsUpPuckDown »

Summary from Elite Prospects as of 2/2/18. Tim Theocharidis has 39 points (same team Baylis played for). Hopefully his name fits on the back of his jersey. Zach Rose who committed this week looks like in interesting goaltending prospect. Berge, Ty, and Barry have done well over the years with goaltenders.

It seems as though the only guys coming in next year at this point are Theocharidis, Barber, St. Jean, Dougherty, and Cullen, although William Cullen is already on campus and he was originally supposed to be in this past year's class.

I'm looking forward to have continued success on the recruiting trail. Coach Bergeron really seems to know what he is doing.

4 seniors graduating, 5 freshman coming in. Cullen may have had Clearinghouse issues and needed a year to become eligible.

I'm thinking it was either that or we didn't have the scholarship spot for him, so he had to "grayshirt" and pay his own way this year while he could practice with the team, and then he can be on scholarship and have 4 more years of eligibility. It's basically the same as a redshirt except he didn't receive a scholarship for his "redshirt" year. It's a common practice in football when oversigning occurs, so that could be what this was.

We don't seem to waste time and money going after blue chippers who aren't going to sign with us anyway. We get the right kids who fit into the system and into the league. What's been really positive is the goaltending recruits. This staff has a very good message and it's been resonating with the kids.

Updates from Elite Pro Prospects. Added Garrett Daly who hails from the same MN high school as Max Johnson (you may have heard of him) and Taylor Schneider.

Adam Conquest is the most ridiculous superhero name I've ever heard.

As a season ticket and multiple decades of support Falcon Hockey I'm going to take my Falcon Vision Glasses off for a moment and reflect a tad on recruiting and the "system" others has mentioned on this thread.

FACT:
1) WCHA is the 2nd weakest league. Yes, two teams got in this year and both lost in OT
2) BG has yet to Win the league or the League Tournament since the new WCHA
3) Highest finished in league has been 2nd & made 1 tournament final.
4) College Sports (Basketball, Hockey, Baseball and Football) have evolved to the point where if you have a lot of seniors on your roster, just means they typically aren't next level players. Of Course there are exceptions and some of BG hockey seniors sign low level minor deals.
5) Boston College who finished one spot ahead of BG in the Pairwise had ZERO seniors on their rosters this year and five Juniors.

I'd gladly take some blue-chippers into the program and has some elite talent walk out onto the ice. We may be getting guys that fit the "system", but like going to packed arenas and coming home with Ws. BC had a down year and didn't make the tournament for second straight year, but their "blue chippers" are still finishing higher then we are. I'm aware that York is a legend and he coached here. I've got a contacted in the BC athletic department and he shares once in a while with me.

Actually, one was an "Acceptance of admission", which I found interesting. Taylor Schneider.

Theocharidis continues to light the lamp but my concern is whether a Carlton guys stats will ever translate into the same success at the DI level. Aside from Dufour the scoring results haven't kept pace. Maybe that he's a defenseman posting these numbers will be the exception?

Andrew Sturtz did well at Penn State and he's a CP guy.

Baylis would be the only high level CP guy we have gotten and he has been somewhat of a disappointment, scoring wise anyway. The others...DuFour, D'andrea etc......were not highly sought after recruits.

Theocharidis would be rated higher than any of these guys, except maybe Sturtz.

I'd say Baylis is doing better than Dufour did. Has 10 more points than Dufour did 3 years into college hockey. He had his sophomore slump, but I thought he was strong this year with 31 points. In his 4 years in the CCHL, he didnt start putting up solid numbers until his last 2 years. I'm expecting he will have another strong season.
Bring back the glory!

Here are the numbers on the newest commit, Chrystopher Collin:

Code: Select all

Pos	HT WT DOB 2017-18 Team GP	G A TP	PIM
F	5'11"	174	5/5/1999	Flin Flon Bombers (SJHL)	49	22	28	50	125
He's from Quebec so that helps with the French speaking in the locker room. 125 penalty minutes in 50 games along with a points-per-game > 1. He led the team in goals and was second in total points. Looks like he's in the 20-21 class.

Flin Flon Bomber awards this year:
  • Royal Bank 3 Star Award- First- Brenden Newton, Second- Nate Hooper and Third- Chystopher Collin
Nick Oklobdzija- Rookie Of The Year- Calvon Boots and Crystopher Collin
Pat Spiller- Top Goal Scorer- Crystopher Collin
Lastly, this is the league the Humboldt Broncos play in.
2-time BGSU Intramural Curling Champion.
