Oregon
Fall camp is over so it's time to focus on the season opener against Oregon. Phil Steele has the Ducks ranked in the top 20 at nearly every skill position so this will be a daunting challenge for a defense thin in depth and learning a new system. I am curious to see how well the offense performs against a P5 team as we may need to outscore opponents early on to win.
BG is currently a 31 point dog.

Re: Oregon
Per the AP Poll, which has been released within the last hour or so, Oregon will come into this contest ranked #24 in the country.
I expect us to compete, but I think only a fool would expect us to win and be mad about a pretty much guaranteed loss.
My hope is that we can keep it competitive and gain some valuable experience for our guys from this payday game so that come MAC play, we're in a position to succeed. I truly do believe in Coach Jinks, and I think that it's time to get this rolling along again.
Go Falcons! 12 days.

Re: Oregon
If we keep it within 40 and come away with no injuries, I'll call it a success. Oregon is definitely an under ranked team with tons of experience and BG will need at least 3 weeks for the defense to do anything consistently, IMHO.

Good article about this being the year Jinks has to show some improvement or the prospects of him coaching are over.
Nice that game week has arrived, although interest in the program seems to be at an all-time low. Oregon is currently a 31.5 point favorite.
The media guide should be out tomorrow with an updated depth chart along with Jinks' weekly press conference.
Go Falcons.

Re: Oregon
It seems to me David Briggs is sticking his neck out calling this a "make-or-see-ya-later season" and saying five wins are probably the minimum for him to keep his job.
I'll grant that I didn't think Bowling Green would push Jennifer Roos out a year early, either. Even so: Pushing out Jinks out two years early would cost the better part of $1 million. That's a lot of dough. I'd be shocked if it happens.
And I do expect some improvement this year. Our quarterback play alone will win us some games.

South Point Casino has the over/under at 4.4 wins.
Re: Oregon
I'll say it again. I think the signs indicate that Jinks is on the hot seat.
- he signed a thousand Juco transfers
- we have two money road games and hopefully a great revenue day when we host Maryland, along with many future money games, more than normal
That tells me he is feeling the need to win pronto so he is patching his team, and the athletic department is financially preparing for a massive spend day. Hopefully all goes well and that massive spend is used for a stadium renovation rather than paying someone to go away.

I'll take the over, but that seems fair.Tswam wrote:South Point Casino has the over/under at 4.4 wins.
Re: Oregon
I listened to the pressers ...
- Harris. Defense is further along than last year by far, Coach P is a great instructor
- Doege. Great playmakers on offense at WR and RB. Note, he sounds like a guy in his first press conference. He will become more confident talking with the press quickly I bet
- Jinks. Ready to put 2017 behind. Setting expectations a bit low for the Oregon game. Says best way to counter Herbert and the Oregon offense is to stay on the field and score. Said Pelini is installing a bend but don't break defense, which I hate because it so often becomes bend and then break. Not worried about the time zone difference, says they have a prep plan. Pelini and Cristobal went up against each other as HCs so they will have an idea of each other's plans. Lots of guys gained lots of weight which will help tremendously with physicality. Looks back last year on games where they had opportunities with regret. Said roster is a year away from what he wants.
We've got weekly press conferences. It is football season again!

Re: Oregon
Updated depth chart has been released: https://twitter.com/Thomas_Schmeltz/sta ... 77/photo/1" target="_blank
Hargrove is listed as the backup RB along with Denley, those two are also returning kicks. Phoutavong listed as a starter after kind of disappearing the past couple of seasons, hopefully he can impress as a senior. The defense is severely undersized up front and lacks experience at LB, but the secondary looks good and it appears Clint Stephens has won back his starting position.
Three more days and a wake up until kickoff.

Re: Oregon
Wow. We are small up front on defense. I thought jinks said we had some size there.
Re: Oregon
I'll be happy if we are competitive for a half. If we see another team hang 60-70 it is going be another long season.
Re: Oregon
I would agree if it weren't Oregon. Oregon is one of those havoc offenses. Like Tennessee in 2015. They drilled us, yet it didn't matter. Now if we give up those kinds of points to Maryland, then I'd agree with you.kdog27 wrote:I'll be happy if we are competitive for a half. Re: Oregon
This isn't Oregon of 5 years ago. They were 7-6 last year and are a fringe top 25 team. Plus the pac 12 is the worst of the 5 big conferences. I dont mean be tied with them or anything. I'd be happy it was say 21-10 and they pull away to 30 in the second half. If its 35-0 in the second quarter this is the same ole jinks team.
