Agreed. People on here are talking up Oregon way too much in an effort to make ourselves feel better if we get boat raced. This isn't Chip Kelly's Oregon team. They're no better (IMO) than some of the Purdue, Mizzou, or Maryland teams that we've beaten in years past.
No, I don't expect us to win because our team isn't where it was in years past when we could beat those 2nd tier Power 5 teams. But let's not act like Oregon is in the same world as OSU, Clemson, or 'bama right now. They're a decent team, will win some games, but they're not a powerhouse. We should be able to be at least competitive for a half against a team like this. And I'd expect a win if we were the 2015 or 2003 Falcons.

I disagree. I talked them up because they should be better than last year and arguably have the most NFL ready quarterback in the country in Herbert. There's a reason they're in the preseason top 25. Obviously they aren't OSU or Bama, but it would be hard to expect a win from any of the past BG teams, much less the current one. I would happily eat crow if they somehow pull off the upset, but this isn't an Indiana or Kansas kind of P5 team.
BG '10
Attended more games than any responsible student should have.

I don't think they're Indiana or Kansas either.
I don't think they're appreciably better than the Pitt/Purdue teams we've beaten in the past. They've also got a new HC. A guy who was only mediocre at FIU.
No doubt Herbert looks like a damned good QB, and is getting a lot of NFL Draft and Heisman hype, but he's also only played 8 games each of the past 2 seasons. The list of guys who get Heisman/NFL draft hype based on small samples to then fall on their face are large. Not saying he won't live up to the hype, but he wouldn't be the first one. And their ranking right now is based on him being the player he's been hyped as.
I also don't expect us to win. I don't even expect us to compete. I expect us to lose by 50-60 plus because that's where I believe we are as a football program. My point is not that we should expect more than that THIS year. My point is that I'm not about to just say, "oh well you shouldn't hope to compete with a great team like Oregon" after they do beat us that badly. They're a good team, not a great team. If this BG team has any hopes of competing in the MAC you should at least be able to hang tough with Oregon for a half. The good BG teams in years past certainly would have.
Oregon will be a good team, a great team if Herbert stays healthy and the coaching staff continuity is not a problem. Here's the thing. The matchup is a nightmare. Their offense puts up massive numbers (when healthy of course, they were much less effective without Herbert) on anything but top defenses. Washington with that great secondary will probably hold them to under 20. They'll score deep into the 30s on most other conference teams and 50s on non conference opponents.
You can argue until you are blue in the face about what team is better and why when comparing past opponents. The real question is the matchup. Oregon's offense, which can hit you in so many ways, up against our defense, which is thin up front. This will be a nightmare on that side of the ball. We have to score a bunch of points to stay in it.
Tennessee was much the same in 2015. Their offense was great against anyone other than elite defenses. Our 2015 defense was fine but not elite by any stretch. So our plan was to score a bunch of points. Which worked until the offense ran out of steam and made mistakes in the second half and Tennessee poured it on. So when will Oregon start pouring it on? When will the offense run out of steam and leave the defense without a shot? For us to win, the answer has to be never. The offense would have to go punch for punch all game long.
That's just the reality of this particular matchup. No matter Oregon's final record, they have a huge advantage on us.

If we do as well against Oregon as we did against Tennessee a couple of years back, I would be absolutely delighted. We made the Vols nervous that night.

I like that we went for it on 4th Down but you can't call the same play back to back against the school like Oregon. Would rather seen like a screen pass to Miller
Offense will be one of the best in the MAC this year. Same coverage issues so far on D but winning the first quarter against a ranked team on the road is a good building block.
