Couldn't post anything due to baby induced paralysis. Baby is in bed now so here we go ...
Fast start was great. But actually better was the late TD in the half and continued drives gaining some first downs. Previous season openers under Jinks had fast starts and then absolutely nothing for 50+ minutes. So there's some improvement
Defense is improved. Yes I know we've given up 51 currently. There is better fundamental football. Wait until we see MAC offenses. I bet we will be far improved
Defensive line is still small. But they're fast.
Not a good game to evaluate the secondary
Clint Stevens was penalized for having too long of pants. OK ...
Doege is better than last year.
We may be a top three MAC passing, rushing, and total offense.
Offensive line is up and down. Again wait until we see a MAC defensive line for full evaluation because that Oregon defense us good and their DC is a great one
I'm still learning the new receivers. Old dog, new tricks here
Missing Davidson already. But the new K is going to be fine. Hey, it's still better than 2006 special teams

Beautiful TD there! Good seeing the offense moving later in the game.

That throw from Doege to Miller was a beauty. I expect to see that plenty more times this year.

51-24 Ducks, 2:40 left in the 3rd.

Our score forced them to put their starters back in the game, so that's pretty cool.

Just got a stop near the edge of the red zone. It'll be 4th down when we come back from the break.

End of 3, Ducks up 51-24.

But instead of bashing our student athletes (18-23 year olds) how about we just support the hell out of them? Win or lose, they're all we've got.
I didn't see anyone bashing the players. The coach? Sure. But nothing he hasn't earned. As for the game...few really thought BG would win this, or even make it close. The real gauge of how good they are may come against Maryland, a bottom team in the Big Ten, and of course when MAC play starts.

Don’t know what final score was as we’ve been out, but Maryland was giving Texas all it could handle. A bit surprising in that all the turmoil might have been distracting. I know Texas isn’t what it used to be, but still.

Noticed someone, maybe a student trainer, on BG's sideline wearing a throwback Falcon logo hat.

I saw Seth Doege wearing a very nice-looking throwback hat.

They took a beating..but it was a reasonable beating given the scenario. 70-10 would be unreasonable. We're going to score a lot of points if our QB stays healthy. Miller could break Freddie's BG record for catches in a season. Give Pelini a full year to install his defense and recruit for it and I think we'll be in a position to contend...next year. This year feels like a 4-8, 5-7 kind of year.

They competed to the end....coming off a 2-10 year...that's good sign

Howard almost beat Ohio yesterday. If our defense can watch film and grow, who knows?

As the media are saying, our early home game with Miami will tell us a ton about where we are headed.

Some quick thoughts I had on the game yesterday:

- Our defense gave up 58 points but somehow still looked WAY better than last year. Oregon is as fast as ever and there was no way we were going to keep up with their receivers.

- Our offense is going to be good, especially in MAC play. Doege is a real talent and Clair is going to set some records here if he stays healthy. I'm a little worried about WRs beyond Miller. The talent looks to be there but it doesn't seem like the connection has been well established between them and Doege just yet.

- Needham's kicks looked strong, but holy cow do I miss Davidson.

- This is the worst possible year for us to have 3 P5 games. I think there is pretty significant improvement but not to the level we are going to do much against the Oregons/Marylands/Georgia Techs of the world, and those games are going to essentially be three automatic losses to kick off the season (Unless I'm pleasantly surprised). This would have been an ideal year to have the OOC games be against teams like Troy, Marshall, Arkansas St., etc.

It goes without saying, these are all just my opinions. Maybe I'm wearing orange-tinted glasses, but I was more encouraged after the game yesterday than I had been before.

Defense really allowed 51. Pick six is not on their shoulders. I think if they can generate two to three more stops per game compared to the last two seasons then they'll be competitive in conference play.
