I hope not. A better question in retrospect is: Why did we offer him in the first place?
(Of course he took the job. Who wouldn't jump at the chance to earn $2 million guaranteed?)
Will firing him right now cost more than at the end of the season? How much will it cost to fire him at the end of the year vs the end of next year? I hate to say it but our athletic department is asking these questions. For us, every dollar counts.
I heard a rumor all these money games were supposed to go to a major doyt renovation. The athletic department can’t want to cancel those plans, right?
Hiring jinks was risky. Someone pointed out hiring urban from a wide receiver coach was risky. I had no problem rolling the dice on him, but 5 years? Dumb dumb dumb. Should’ve been 3.
On a side note, buffalo looks like a dominant team. I would like to go back to getting lower division head coaches that have torn between up their leagues, as buffalo and eastern have done
Some good questions there. I agree with you: I'd rather find a successful FCS coach, someone who -- like Dave Clawson -- had a track record of rebuilding. At this point, that's what we need.
I turned a job down once that would have given me a substantial raise. Reason: I felt I was walking into a position set to fail. I did not have the experience I felt necessary nor did I feel the team I would have been joining would be one where I could succeed or wanted to stay for any amount of time. So I said no and wished them luck at hiring the right guy. I was doing fine, I was in no need for an urgent change. I was in a position to say no to anything that was not ideal.
Jinks had a fine job and a fine salary in a low cost area of the country. He was in a position to say no. So yeah, I relate to the argument that he should have said no if he didn't feel he was the right candidate.
MarkL has spoken.
You may all now return to your daily lives.
We blame Dino for leaving, but the man is 4-0 this year at Syracuse. Several other members of his old staff are coaching at Kent State and they have a better record then BGSU.
Coach's comments from his presser this morning. He gave a very real, honest answer to one of the questions, which I will link below. Honestly... he has a point. This program has always been known for the highs and lows. It's an uphill battle, but he brings up a valid argument about other MAC programs.

Not impressed. A coach also needs to coach former coaches recruits. Jinks had 3 recruiting classes and seniors from Babers. No progress. Nothing will change with a 4th recruiting class. Enough sample size.

It would be much different if they appeared to be turning a corner. A strong argument can be made that we are getting worse with Jinks guys! 4 wins, 2 wins... 1 garbage win this year is realistic.

It just feels like he's run out of answers at this point. He claims that "we have too much talent from an offensive standpoint to have a performance like that” so “we’ve got to look at what we’re doing from a scheme standpoint.”
Really? Our schemes are still bad in Year 3? And that's not what I see anyway. We have a great running back and a quarterback with some clear potential. Other than that? I see receivers -- some with exciting size, to be sure -- struggling to get open at times, especially deep, and an offensive line team getting blown off the ball on every play.
If the line is young and needs time to develop, then sell that. Why talk about schemes in Year 3?

I'm glad Strack asked it. Kudos to Jinks for an honest answer. None of us have questioned his integrity or authenticity when it comes to facing the music. But, if he watches the interviews he gave at the start of the season regarding the improvement we'd see this year, so far he's not delivering. It's great he's recruited well. Doesn't mean much if you and your staff can't coach worth a damn.
The reality is though that he's facing two extremely tough weeks coming up. He's staring 1-5 right in the face and needing to go 4-2 the rest of the way out to achieve the magic five win mark to claim progress. If not, he's going to have to look pretty hard to find anyone willing to support him for a fourth year.
He has to say something, so I don't put much stock in these press conferences. But the don't have all my recruits yet is a cop out. If they were having 5-7, 6-6 type seasons that would be an ok answer. They aren't. This looks like a 1-11 team.
Sadly, I see a 3-9 team, at best, after what I've seen in 4 weeks. Been to every game and we are getting worse every game. I've even had a thought that has NEVER crossed my mind...not renewing my season tix next year. Honestly, I'm 50/50 right now. Crazy.

I remember Clawson saying after his 2-10 season how BG didn't look like a Division 1 football team. The lack of depth and size at several positions is extremely concerning. The depth chart doesn't offer up much hope for next season either, which means one recruiting class isn't going to be the panacea.
If by looking at the “ schemes ”, he means looking at something rather than running something OTHER than the same basic run play inside the tackles and wondering WHY we had less than 100 yds net, then I agree. Change the scheme!
how many times did we put a guy in motion, run a misdirection, try a reverse ( oops, guess we “tried” that). You can go VANILLA in your offense if you’re controlling the line is scrimmage and dominating the opponent’s defense. But we sure don’t do that.
One more thing... do you get the idea that we’re reluctant to run our QB? Seemed as if a few of those sacks that he took were result of continuing to try and throw, when running might have picked up a few yds.
I saw MIami QB hurt us with a few designed runs. Do we even HAVE this in our playbook?
